The best way to save money is to avoid spending it. That might seem obvious, but we still tend to spend money when we don’t really need to do so. We often buy things we don’t really need, replace things we already have, buy stuff we like because we want it, or buy things we think we need instead of trying to think of other alternatives.
Reduce Clutter to Find Stuff Easier
We have probably all done it – bought something new because we couldn’t find an item we already had. By getting rid of stuff we don’t need, we can make more space, get more organized, and find the stuff we need. We don’t need three bottle openers. We just need to know where one is.
Re-use and Repurpose
Instead of buying things like expensive storage containers, we can re-use things like boxes, glass jars, and plastic containers with lids that come with other things in them. Clean them and use them to store other items. Glass jars also make good vases. It’s easy to repurpose other everyday items as well. A coffee can with a lid makes a great bank for storing loose change.
Get into Upcycling
Upcycling is a great way to make use of more stuff. If you like making things, it’s also a great way to have fun being creative without spending your hard-earned money on supplies. You just use what you’ve got on hand. Pinterest has tons of ideas to get you going.
Freshen Things Up
Continuing with that theme, take an old cardboard box and wrap it with fabric to make an attractive storage basket. Turn old clothing into new pieces to wear or make them into home decor like placemats or table runners or quilts. Paint small pieces of furniture or things like shelves and picture frames to give them a new look. It’s much less costly than buying new pieces.
These are just a few of the ways that we can avoid overspending, by using (or re-using) what we already have.
