Evernote is one of the most used organizational tools for freelance writers and service professionals. It allows you to keep everything in one place, including short notes, to-do lists, client contact sheets, photos, audio files, and documents.
If your work area is overrun with post it notes, scraps of paper, loose business cards, and receipts, this free software can help you keep everything neat and organized. With cloud based information storage and multiple software platforms, including phone and tablet versions, you can keep your notes and photos close at hand, WHEREEVER YOU ARE.
Freelance writers often deal with dozens of clients in the course of a year. In most cases, each of these clients has different needs, wants, and tastes, when it comes to the writing they request. While this is easy enough to keep up with during the course of a project, these details are quickly forgotten when new clients and projects fill their time slot.
However, good freelancers know that keeping up with the details and project information of past clients and projects can be incredibly useful. In some cases, it can lead to repeat jobs. In other cases, it can help with new clients or even inspire new projects with an old client.

Note taking methods of freelancers are as varied as the freelancers themselves. Some choose to keep all of their notes on paper or index cards. Others use databases or spreadsheets to organize their client information.
While none of these methods are inherently bad or wrong, there is a solution that is growing in popularity as more writers discover how helpful it can be.
The solution is Evernote, a note taking program that organizes notes into separate search-able 'notebooks.' The program comes pre-installed with many new laptop and desktop computers, but many people never even touch the software because they simply don't know what it is or what a valuable tool it can be.
What makes Evernote so great for freelancers? Evernote has tons of great features, but to keep things simple and on topic, let’s stick with the features that relate to freelancing and client information.
To start with, Evernote allows you to store your information in a set of 'notebooks.' This means that you can divide your information by client, topic, or project. But what if you want to do all three?
Actually, that's easy too because Evernote allows you to tag or label each note, much like you would be able to tag or label a blog post. Also like a blog post, your notes can be sorted and viewed by labels or tags making finding a specific note as easy as browsing your labels.

Of course, even the most careful freelancer doesn't alway remember to label every note. This is where the search function comes in handy. Evernote can easily search within your notes for a certain word or phrase, bringing up every note that mentions it.
Everything in one place
When working on a freelance writing project, it isn't uncommon to get a dozen notes from half a dozen places and in just as many formats. A client could send you an email with a note on how he wants something done then call you to mention a website where certain information can be found.
You may get notes in a working folder on your client's job site and an instruction document that needs to be opened with Microsoft word. If you work with your client in person, you may even be given documents or photos that need to be scanned in. What a mess! While you could struggle to maintain a folder on your desktop with all of this information, you would still need to open half a dozen programs just to see it all.
Evernote takes the mess out of this process. Instead of saving each piece of information in its original format, you can simply click and drag each item into your Evernote notebook. The web clipper can easily add your clients email and job board notes into your Evernote notebook with just a few clicks of the mouse.
