Re: Holiday Meals: Are You A Non-Traditional?

Postby Jem Smith » 03 Nov 2024, 23:40

Can you get Rosellas in syrup there? They're a native (to Australia) hibiscus. I've put them in champagne for a festive cocktail (it turns it pink, then you can eat the rosella at the end) but it works in lemonade or tonic water as a mocktail. Might be hard for you to get hold of though.

Butterfly pea tea is fun too. It changes colour when you add lemon.

I am very disappointed in the hibiscus tea bags that I bought online. The hibiscus that I had bought at the grocery store was better but the store stopped selling such tea bags. So, I have 3 boxes left (75 tea bags total) and am going to give the tea bags as Christmas presents.

Rosellas are different from hibiscus tea. They're a flower, usually preserved in syrup, although you can also make them into jam.

As I had mentioned, I am preparing pasta salad for the holidays. My mother has mostly used bow-tie in her pasta salad. For the holidays this year, I think that I shall do the same.

I would like to discuss some holiday baking with you...

I can't use an oven. Years ago, I caught our oven on fire while attempting to bake a cauliflower pizza. I swore that I would never use an oven again. I haven't.

I rely on an air fryer, a microwave and a counter top burner.

So, for the holidays, I can't do too much baking-wise.

My favorite cookie is the potato chip cookie. I want to give them as presents this Christmas so bad. I can prepare the cookie dough just not the baking part. I would need to rely on my roommate to do the baking part, but just don't know if I can rely on her.

Hours ago, I was online and found a really nice recipe for no bake peanut butter cookies. They only require 3 ingredients and I can prepare them myself! Not my favorite but I think that they would be liked.

I don't know what to do. What would you do?

It would open up new horizons for you if you could get past your fear of using the oven.

That aside, I wouldn't rely on your room mate for that since it sounds like she has her own stuff going on and might not do it for you. No bake cookies might be a better option (though I'm curious how they can be cookies if they're really not baked). I've also seen recipes for brownies you can make in a slow cooker.

Just google "no bake cookies". There are tons of recipes.

I know there are, I was curious about what is in yours.

I don't think it's really a cookie if it's not baked. The ones I have seen before were more like a slice or goodie balls.

I am preparing these for Thanksgiving and maybe Christmas. I like them for the peanut butter.

I value my roommate's life, the cat's life and my life more than cooking with an oven.

-- 22 Nov 2024, 19:11 --

My roommate, the cat, and I have Paid It Forward for this Thanksgiving. We were given two turkeys and two ham slices, which we have given to friends. My roommate is going away for Thanksgiving. I am going away for Thanksgiving, besides the fact that I don't consume turkey and ham.
