I just finished an article that investigates the history of bribery and other corrupt practices by world politicians. I discovered that the most upright-looking leaders were corrupt in some way or the other. The good guys never always win, and in politics, people accept that there is no 'good man' running. They just vote for the candidate who was able to better convince them.
US politics is a lot easier to win. Firstly, there are the GOP states and the DEM states that always vote that way, doesn't matter how corrupt the candidate is, they will spin a magic wand to make him look good.
Secondly, there are the independent states which vote for their benefits and needs. So a charismatic opponent may lose to a bumble bee offering solutions.
Thirdly, there are the silent voters. These are the minority ethnic groups, such as Latinos, afro-Americans, etc. These voters are looking for specific issue promises. So be it a very obviously corrupt candidate or his invisible corrupt opponent, the proposer that promises to solve or address these issues, will win.
