Re: If your kid learns these skills, they can skip college and get rich

College provides more than just skills. It helps you establish a professional network for your future in the work world and you might find your future mate there. <3

I agree with @Netherrealmer that "College is not the only way to success." It's not the ONLY way. But it does have benefits and if a person is given an opportunity to attend an institution of higher learning, I would advise them to embrace it. Education won't ever work against you. You have to screw up on your own. If you screw up, you can't blame attending college for your bad decision-making. :D

For sure, if you are in certain fields such as STEM, I don't want you coming near me if you don't have a college education. I'm speaking specifically of those in medical science.

True. They might even help you find job opportunities and gain true friends.

I want the education system to adapt Finland's education system. No standardized tests, have the best teachers, and promote cooperation in class, not competition.

What I love about Finland is you cannot see your grades so your parents cannot compare you to your siblings and cousins and also their system is so good that no one fails.

I have never been to Finland but I have heard that it is a marvelous country all around. So it's no surprise to hear they have an educational system that works quite well. Out of all the things in my schools that I hated, I hated standardized test the most!! I would happy to get rid of them! If it can for Finland, it can work everywhere else!

You're assuming there that the sole purpose of university education is to get a job, rather than to get an education as an end in itself. There are certainly plenty of jobs that you don't need a university education for, but you can get a lot out of further education. I think we would lose a lot of the richness of our culture (here, where I live, I won't speak for everywhere) if people focused solely on vocational education. When the political climate turns that way they stop offering classes in things like languages and the arts, and children and young adults miss out on opportunities that could have made their lives happier and more meaningful.

Also, I would imagine that most people who try to make a living by streaming videos, or trading stocks as teenagers do not succeed.

Yes. The friendships I established at university have been my longest lasting and deepest, and I made a lot of valuable contacts during that time, as well as figuring out a lot of things about myself. It's not for everyone, but it does have a lot of benefits for many people.

I started making money online at age 12 and the only reason I go to college because my parents forced me to do so., I never had any use my degree. I made more money with stocks.

You can learn about the culture and arts just by reading, No need to go to a University for that. I can cook french cuisine without studying to a culinary school. I never learned English from school, I learned it myself. College is optional now. Just learn Coding or Marketing and you wont be needing it.

That's nice for you. Like I said, I don't think most people succeed at actually making a living through stocks starting out at a young age. If you made enough to live on from just that you're the exception.

There are lots of teens doing well in stocks, starting their own business and other online opportunities. Also not all college millionaires are in stocks or working as influencers. Some of them started a business as children or created apps as teens.

There is no denying the fact that you do not actually need college to become wealthy. There are lots of persons out there who are making it and they did not even complete school. All in all if yiu have access to go to school, my advice for you is to go. School gives you prestige. You would be able to defend yourself where others are.

Not everyone has an interest in, or aptitude for, coding or marketing.

Yeah, you can learn some things about culture and the arts by reading, but it's harder to get the same quality of education that way. For myself, I have tried learning a language on my own, but I find it much easier having the structure and opportunities to practice that you get from doing a language course. That doesn't have to be through a university, but I mean something more in depth and hands on than an app like Duo Lingo. Likewise, I would think someone who goes to culinary school is going to find it easier to pick up the skills they need, and probably end up with better results, than someone learning on their own. That doesn't mean you can't learn another way, there's just a reason why people do it that way.

I also got a lot more out of a uni course in film studies than I did from watching movies. Besides the content, the uni experience was valuable to me for the friends and contacts I made. All of these things were more important to me than just getting a job, otherwise I would have chosen a more vocational course.

I didn't say otherwise. I was responding to you calling college "a scam" on the assumption that its only purpose was to get a job. People get other things out of it, so whether it's worth it for an individual depends on what they are actually looking for. That being said, I think saying that teens can be successful stock brokers or influencers is unrealistic for most people. Sure, there are lots of ways to make money without going to uni, but those are a weird place to start. There are plenty of more conventional paths that are more likely to work out, like say, doing an apprenticeship to be a plumber (or a builder, carpenter, hairdresser or whatever).

and so as finishing college, It is unrealistic for most people too. If you are not Academically smart but you have talents in other fields, why force yourself. Also I never said this article is everything you need to know. This is suppose to be a series. This is suppose to have sequels. So I have other skills to talk about in the sequels. It is a waste of time to write everything in 1 single article with 2000 words for a single dollar.

I'm not saying anyone should force themselves to go to uni, or to finish if they don't like it. It's definitely not for everyone. I was just saying I don't think it's fair to call it a scam. I'll be interesting to read the next article in your series.

Okay, I had one more thing to add. You said that "College is only useful if you are a STEM person". That seems to be a pretty common belief here in Australia too, but the fields with the highest rates of employment here are a mixture of disciplines: nursing, social work, engineering teaching, psychology and hospitality (in that order). So there are degrees for people not inclined towards STEM that are likely to lead to a job too. Anybody who wants to work in most of those fields (hospitality would be the exception- you could do other types of training) will need a degree to get a job here because that's just how those professions are set up right now. If you want to work in teaching you can do things that are similar without a degree (like be a teaching assistant or an early childhood educator), just not a teacher. The pay won't be as good, but you won't have the student loans so there's that to weigh up.

Sadly, now that we have constant mass shootings, my daughter attends classes online. Social life on campus is nonexistent. The social aspect was what I really enjoyed about attending college. My daughter can't enjoy that.

That's so sad. :( Are there mass shootings happening at university campuses as well as in schools? We don't have that here.

Yes. To think that educational institutions are constantly being turned into crime scenes. If that isn't bad enough some of our idiot politicians want teachers to be armed. They say it's for self-defense to defend the students. But as a parent, would you really feel safe if you knew your child's teacher had a loaded gun?? What idiot thought of that as a solution?
