I have a few personal stories for you on this topic. But first I shall tell you what research says about water consumption.

If you drink too much water you can suffer from:

Water toxicity such as high blood pressure and low heart rate.

As your cells swell, you can also suffer from seizures or even go into a coma.

You suffer from tiredness or fatigue.

How much water per day is enough? A half of a gallon of water per day is not quite enough. You should drink more water if you are suffering from thirst, pee that is dark or smells, dizziness, fatigue, peeing less than normal and dry mouth. If you are really not sure, stick to the advice of 8 glasses of water per day!

Ok. The following are my stories…

I love diet soft drinks. I have drunk diet soft drinks my whole life. I always looked down upon water, especially from a kitchen sink.

When water became bottled, I drank the stuff, but did not really like.

These days, people preach that we need more water! Leslie Sansone says to drink good pure clean water. Joyce Meyer says to take water with you wherever you go. I listened to their advice.

I began to drink more and more water. A whole lot. I also thought that bottled water was the money-saving mecca as is so much easier to save money by buying crates of water instead of diet soft drinks.

So, I got a wake-up call a few weeks ago. I had an appointment where I would be at for quite a few hours and had only packed a tote of bottled water. No food or diet soft drinks. I began to get overheated, fatigue and almost pass out. An acquaintance was there who also happens to be a nurse. She gave myself a diet Coke. It worked! I felt better! I guess my electrolytes had plummeted as barely had any sodium because of so much water.

I still drink some water such as homemade sweet tea or lemonade but not a zillon bottles of water like I had been. I buy either diet Sam’s cola with 50 mg sodium, diet Coke with 60 mg sodium or diet Dr. Pepper with 70 mg sodium, based upon what I can afford in a given week. Check your grocery store’s weekly sales.

Now I always take diet soft drinks wherever I go with some food.

I understand that drinking too much water is dangerous. Is it something that happens very much to people going about their ordinary lives? Is it somethign most of us need to be concerned about?

Yes, that is absolutely right.

The rule about 8 glasses of water a day is actually kind of myth. How much you need depends on specifics about you- age, weight, sex etc. Also if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. So if you're not sure, making sure that your pee isn't too dark and that you aren't thirsty is a good guide.

You also need to keep up your electrolytes by eating regularly and making sure you have enough salt if you are drinking a lot, and especially if you are also sweating a lot. You can buy electrolyte drinks, like Gatorade, or a concentrated powdered version you add to water. You can even get electrolyte gummies they make for runners. You can also just eat some salty food, like some people add salt to porridge. I've found on hot days a salted caramel smoothie (with pureed dates and some salt added) helps prevent me from getting headaches.

Also, drinking other liquids does count. It doesn't have to be just water. If you drink juice, or even tea, coffee or softdrinks that still provides hydration. You can also get some of your water intake from food.

It gets very hot and humid where I live so if you live a very active lifestyle drinking enough water can be literally life or death. People die of heatstroke sometimes in the summer here. Re. heatstroke another thing to bear in mind is that in very hot weather you should drink water that is cool or room temperature, but not very cold/icy. I can't remember why, but that was an official recommendation from the government, apparently drinking very cold water can actually make things worse.

I think it only affects some people, not everyone. It's more of a concern if you're an athlete, or you have a medical condition that makes you feel thirsty when you don't really need to drink so you drink too much, or sometimes for people on particular drugs, legal or otherwise. There was a case in the news here years ago where a teenager died from water toxicity because she was on Ecstasy and it caused her to drink too much water so her brain swelled and killed her.

Personally I have issues with my blood pressure and some other stuff so I have to keep an eye on my electrolyte balance. If I don't drink enough I get headaches, but 'enough' for me can be a LOT and I can overdo it if I'm not careful, so I also take electrolytes.

May I ask how you get your electrolytes?

Like I said, as a drink (electrolyte powder mixed with water- you can get it from the chemist or the supermarket) or electrolyte gummies.

There was a similar high profile case in the UK a few years ago. It was actually the water and not the drug that killed the poor girl. I have also heard that athletes are in danger of drinking too much water. Thanks for your helpful reply Jem, that is very informative.

I might look for powdered Gatorade this week. Is such powder expensive? Worth the money? Would a different powder be better? Thank you!

I haven't used powdered Gatorade, it was a different brand. From memory it's cheaper than Gatorade (at least the liquid form, I don't know if you can get powdered gatorade)

I am just interested in this whole electrolytes thing.

So, I gave a friend some money to buy some water enhancer for myself while my friend was at Walmart.

She grabbed some great value (a Walmart brand) water enhancer called mixed berries electrolytes water enhancer with all B vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin E, sodium and potassium.

I actually like the taste. Such water enhancer kind-of tastes like a wine cooler!

But I am not giving up my diet soft drinks!

Drinking too much water puts a load on the kidneys and also it diluted the digestive juices.

That is, water is important but if you drink too much it is a problem. There is something called water toxicity and it can cause high blood pressure or a slow heart rate. Not everything is good.

If you drink too much water, your cells swell and you can have a seizure or even lose consciousness. This is a real research, not just a story.

So don't rush to drink water without a plan. Listen to your body and don't force it. Everything in moderation is healthy. Water is life but it can also be dangerous.

Everything is good in limit, doctors says drink 8 glass of water per day is good for health, if we drink 15 glass of water per day then definitely it will harm us.

The truth is that buying bottled water is smart. It’s healthier and cheaper than drinking sugary sodas.

But even better is buying a large bottle of water. This cuts down on plastic and saves you extra money.

A person who spits water never stops drinking. Put your savings into clean water and save your health. Even if you buy a whole crate, it’s still a more affordable option than other drinks.

I buy bottled water by the crate. I like to buy water enhancer too. For some odd reason, plain water makes myself hungry.

Great article! <3 I was recently horrified to hear two of my sisters saying they have to have at least 3.5 litres of water per day... I feel it's too much, especially based on their weight and height. I remember maybe a decade ago, there was a very popular diet where people starved themselves, replacing food with copious amounts of water. Sadly, a UK lady died because she developed various water toxicity complications, and her body shut down. I wouldn't solely rely on diet drink either as they are heavily leaden with posisonous sugars. It really is about balance.
