Uses of Diatomaceous Earth

Postby Netherrealmer » 19 Nov 2018, 14:47

I decided to share some of my knowledge as a farmer. I hope this will be helpful for everyone.

What is Diatomaceous Earth?

Well let's say Millions of years ago, these being existed:
Image

They are called Diatoms, they are microscopic life that lives on bodies water for millenniums! They solidified into this rock looking thing that is ground up into a powder called Diatomaceous earth! This powder is mostly composed the skeletons of these microscopic beings. Diatomaceous Earth is one of the most useful items you can buy online and some hardware stores. They are like three dollars per kilo. So it is a very cheap material with multiple uses and only few people knows about this miracle powder.

They are not really common on my country but I buy them online at ebay. I call this thing a miracle powder because of all the good things it can do. I recommend to use the food grade version of Diatomaceous Earth.

It can get rid of external parasites for your pets-
If your cat have lice problems and your dog have fleas and ticks problems, Diatomaceous Earth can get rid of those external parasites torturing your pet by sucking their blood. All you need to do is to rub the powder throughout the skin of your pet. You can dust of the excess if you like. This powder is harmless to mammals but it dehydrates and calcifices insects to death. I don't recommend any brand at all just buy the food grade one so it will not harm your pet.

It can get rid of internal parasites of pets and livestock. Cats, dogs,Chickens, pigs and goats can have problems with worms. A teaspoon of Food grade Diatomaceous Earth mixed to the food or drink of your pet can also kill the internal parasites like worms. It is much more safer unlike those harsh chemicals. Diatomaceous Earth dehydrates the worms and other internal parasites so the organs of your pet or livestock will be parasite free.

It is a great fertilizer- Yup it has all the nutrition a soil needed to make plants happy! The skeletons of fossilized diatoms have the nutrition a soil needs to be healthy.

It's a great organic pesticide- Your crops will be bug free if you spray Diatomaceous Earth mixed with water to your plants. It will kill all the pest insects or snails that are killing your plants.

You can use it as a face mask- It is cheaper than most commercial face mask. I know its weird that a powder usually used as pest control and fertilizer being used as face mask but it does make the skin soft and supple. Just mixed it with some water and turn it into paste. Oh some people also uses it to moisturize their hair. There are some tutorials online on how to use Diatomaceous Earth for beauty purposes.

Hey, I actually have some of this stuff on my shelf at home. I was able to find it at a local grocery store.

It was recommended to me as an aid in getting rid of a bedbug infestation and it seems to have worked. We had an out of town visitor who brought them in with their luggage.

We sprinkled it all over the carpets, all over the mattress, down into the cracks of the upholstered furniture, etc, anywhere the critters tend to hide. We vacuumed up the excess but left most of it in the hidden depths. Have not seen any more of those little nasties since, so it does seem to work in getting rid of little bugs.

This is a good way to get parasites off of your cats or dogs, and adding a veterinarian's assistance to the mixture you've created may also be necessary.

This is the first time that I am hearing about it. It really sounds like a miracle powder and a must have for people with farms. I don't have any pets right now but I can definitely use it for my kitchen garden. Can it be used along with compost? How frequently we need to use it?

It is the first time I hear about this. I have a dog and a cat, usually I give them pills to get rid of external and internal parasites, this powder can be a better solution. I am also interested in using it as an organic pesticide, sometimes it is a big headache to get rid of bugs that destroy our crops.
I will search for it but I think I will only find it online

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural substance made from the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms. It has a variety of uses, including:

Pest control: DE is often used as a natural insecticide to control pests such as ants, bed bugs, and cockroaches. When pests come into contact with DE, it damages their exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate and die.

Animal feed additive: DE is often added to animal feed as a source of silica, which can improve the health and growth of livestock.

Filters: DE is commonly used as a filter medium in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. It can be used to filter water, air, and other liquids to remove impurities.

Industrial uses: DE is used in a variety of industrial applications, such as as a filler or abrasive in products like paint, plastics, and toothpaste.

Personal care: DE can be used as a gentle abrasive in personal care products like toothpastes, and as a skin exfoliant.

Food grade DE is also used as an anti-caking agent in food processing and as a way to filter beer and wine.

Isn't it dangerous if you inhale it? I would think that would make it not such a good idea to use on your face.

This is something new for me. Never heard of this term. I will see if it is locally available and I can use it for the purposes you have mentioned in the article.
