Pop How society will change if life extension technology improves

Postby Netherrealmer » 05 Jan 2023, 07:53

Those who are opposed to life extension technologies almost always argue that it is necessary for some people to pass away due to the world's growing population. However, that theory is flawed, and what will actually happen is that fewer people will want to have children. Japan, Sweden, and Switzerland take the top three spots for countries with the longest lifespans. Having children was less of a priority there due to the fact that people there can live up to the age of 100. Some married couples in those countries have settled for the companionship of animals, also known as fur babies or pets.

In addition, there will still be deaths due to the fact that only the wealthy will be able to afford this technology. Because of the prohibitive cost of life extension technology, the middle class and the poor will continue to perish in the same manner as they always have. Did you know that diabetes can now be treated successfully? Even though there is a procedure called pancreas transplant, diabetic patients continue to pass away because they are unable to afford the expensive technology required for the procedure.

Even if a cure is discovered for cancer, aging, and every other disease, people will still pass away as a result of acts of violence, accidents, and natural disasters. Therefore, there will still be a general decrease in population. Because most people pass away between the ages of 35 and 50, people have always made an effort to have as many children as they can. This is because people's natural instinct drives them to want to have replacements for themselves. Then, as medical science and technology advance, people are living longer.

Because children and grandchildren can compete with you financially if you live longer, fewer people will actually want to have children if they learn they can extend their lifespan. This is due to the fact that children and grandchildren can outlive you. They will eventually wish for you to pass away so that they can inherit your estate, but this won't happen as long as you are still alive because you are 300 years old.

This will decrease the number of "old money" people since they cannot get inheritance anymore.

You know how most of us do not care about our 3rd degree cousins and other far relatives. I can see 200 year old billionaires with long lifespan will not care about their great grandchildren. Yes they are your descendants but the blood is already far. This may sound creepy but in countries where cousin marriages are legal, long lifespan could lead to someone marrying their far ancestors.

The work force will also be more competitive because life extension technology also increases the prime age. A person could still be work at age 90 since aging has already reversed.

It would be fine to have it if not experiencing serious illnesses. It is how I wanted to be. Only a few people who can reach a centennial age, like my granny aged 104.

If life extension technology improves, it is likely that society will change in a number of ways. Some potential impacts could include:

Increased longevity: If people are able to live longer and healthier lives, the average lifespan could increase significantly. This could have a number of societal implications, such as changes to retirement and pension systems, and an increased need for healthcare and long-term care.

Changes to the workforce: If people are able to stay healthy and productive for longer periods of time, it could lead to changes in the workforce, such as an increased need for retraining and upskilling, and a shift in the balance of power between older and younger workers.

Impact on family structures: If people are able to live longer, it could lead to changes in family structures, such as larger and more multigenerational households, or an increased reliance on assisted living arrangements.

Changes to social norms: The societal expectations and norms surrounding aging and the role of older people in society may need to be reevaluated as the concept of "old age" becomes less relevant.

Ethical and moral considerations: Improved life extension technology could also raise a number of ethical and moral questions, such as whether it is fair for some people to have access to life-extending treatments while others do not, or whether there are limits to how long people should be allowed to live.

It's my personal opinion that I would prefer a quality life over a long one. Fortunately my family has a long lifespan history where people have lived more than 95 years ( most of them) except for those who died in unnatural ways like car accident or serving the country.
I am a insulin dependent diabetic from a very young age but I still aspire to live long like my grandparents and stay active and productive.

The majority of people eat unhealthy foods away from home, and even those who prepare food at home often go out to dine with friends, which leads to a variety of health issues.

Quality of life is part of the life extension research. Be 90 years old but have the stamina and looks of someone on their prime.

This sounds good..but I feel that Nature is smarter than us. The life span, growing up, ageing...they all have significance. It's too early to say how it would turn out to be. But being in our prime for too long can also be very monotonous. One looks forward to different stages of life with different kinds of experience and expectations. Life is more rich with different kinds of experiences at different stages.

I think we will eventually see 90 year olds that look 30. We now have 50 year olds that look 20.

I won't mind living a long life as long as I have no major health issues and I can take care of myself. But if lifespan is extended significantly, the world may become overcrowded and may not have sufficient resources to support the human population.

Its actually the opposite because longer lives= less babies. Look at the birthrate of Sweden and Japan.

Yet at one point in time, countries with decreasing populations might need to get more people coming in.
Or they could be subject to wars by some lunatics trying to invade and capture their territories.

I would be happy to stay alive until my 70s because I don't think living to be a hundred or more would be of any use, lol.

Life extension technology may improve, but nature has its own ways. No one can defy death for ever.

If people life extend they will have to work longer. Pension system will not be able hold so many people and years for going in retirement will increase (in France there are protests against this rules). We already have in some country how retirement system barely holds. They just don't have enough money to pay all people pension.

You should watch the 1973 movie Soylent Green for logical answers to some of these problems and their solutions.

I don't think we will eat people. There will be some other way to reduce population or it will not be allowed such tech go in public. Maybe we will need more people if we manage travel in space and colonize other planets.
