Pop I finally decoded if a Netflix show will be canceled

Postby Netherrealmer » 17 Nov 2022, 04:42

Many of us wait for tv shows to have multiple seasons before we watch so we won't get disappointed if it got canceled. Getting invested to a show only for it to be canceled sucks. This works for Netflix only. I finally get to decode if a Netflix show will be canceled.

1.In able for a show to survive another season, it has to be on trending top 10 in your country, You should also check what is trending in other high population countries like USA,India,UK,Canada,Mexico,Latin America as a whole (netflix count them as one),Phillippines,Indonesia,Jordan,Brazil and Thailand. If a show is out of top 10 trending in a month it is going to be canceled. If a show is high budget and its out of top 5 within a month it will be canceled too because the have highest expectations.

2.Korean and European Netflix shows have higher chance of getting renewed because they are low budget. American shows have the highest expectations. Korean and European shows don't even need to be in top 10 to survive. They are cheaper to produce.

3. Shows marketed to teenagers and lesbians have low survival rate. Stranger things and Orange is the new Black are anomalies because they manage to have a complete run. Gay male themes have high success rate because teenage girls are into it. For some reason, Lesbian themes had high cancelation rate on Netflix. There are few exceptions but yeah Netflix have high expectation for these genres.

4.A Netflix show that will get canceled usually have a very empty Subreddit. The Subreddit of the show Imperfects is a ghost town while the Subreddit of Money Heist is very active.

5. If a show barely have marketing, there is a high chance it will get canceled. Squid Game is an anomaly since it got viral through word of mouth but Majority of shows with no marketing dies.

6. If no one talks about a Netflix show on Twitter it is dead in arrival. Look Emily in Paris is hated on social media but it got renewed for a complete run because people hate watch it. Hate Watching causes ratings. If a show have no reaction as in people dont talk about it, Its days are numbered.

7. Low rewatch rate- There are shows with good ratings but still got canceled because people didn't rewatch. Shows with low rewatch rate is also candidate for canceling. If a show is also not completed by people who watched it within a month it also gets canceled. its the fate of the show first kill.

Most of time when you try to open netflix to show some films they show film unavailable for your country which leads that you pass by VPN to be able to watch some films.

Hmm...you have made some really valid points. I totally agree with your Hate watching thing. Negative publicity on social media platforms actually works as a boon sometimes. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if there is publicity stunt on part of producers and teams to get negative publicity to highlight their show.

I do not watch new shows that cannot stay in top 10 for a whole month because I know they will get canceled. I am also a bit distrustful of American shows because they have high cancel rate. Spanish,German and Korean shows have high renewal rates.

Your analysis is quite fascinating. BY the way, what are you watching on Netflix these days? As far as I am concerned, I am not subscribed to Netflix these days.

I stick to Korean and European (German and Spanish) shows because all of them gets renewed, I have trust issues with American shows because they die quickly. I did watch Wednesday because it gets popular enough to be safe from cancelation. Jenna Ortega is the most popular actress now so its safe. I also like the Reality show the Circle, it is like big brother but contestants talk through chatrooms and they live alone. So they can catfish if they like.

I am switching to Disney Plus this month because it has a larger library and the Shows I like are off season.

I am yet to watch this show but I have read so many good reviews about this show. I subscribed to HBO during House of Dragons and Netflix during Vikings Valhalla. Currently, I not subscribed to any streaming services.

darn it, german shows are not safe anymore, Netflix want to have 38 million views for the German show 1899 but it only got 35 million views. In other platforms that is a hit but because it is the most expensive German show in history expectations are high. High Budget shows are high risk for cancellations.

To be fair it is the first high budget German shows. A high budget show must hit Stranger Things, Wednesday level of ratings or they get canceled.

You are right on your analysis when it comes to Netflix shows to be cancelled. Your no. 6 is apt when it's not talked about on Twitter that's the end of it

I don't have Netflix, only Disney+ and this one it is because of my kids. Your analysis is correct, a production needs to have good audience numbers so that they are worth the cost of production. If this relationship is not minimally balanced or very favorable, then the series ends up canceled.

These are really great hacks that people can use to decode Netflix shows that they should invest in. The subreddit part is almost the most valid and the most realistic I have seen often.

Netflix as a company is profits conscious and all the parameters listed by the original poster are all financially related variables that indicate the show won't be profitable to keep on running. So they just cancel it.

Does Netflix check only Reddit for comments or they give attention on other media? Where is netflix profile most active?

Netflix dont measure redditors but it has been proven the smaller the reddit community the high likely the show is not being watched,

You have said it , especially a show with barely marketing and less awareness creation it is most likely to be easily forgotten about and cancelled

A show with haters will have more chance to survive because at least its talked about. Look at Emily in Paris. Than a loved show like Santa Clarita Diet which is loved by the audience but the ratings is not enough.

One thing I've learned watching Korean dramas.
RATINGS are very deceptive. HATING on the other hand ... ;)

It's really annoying when a good show gets cancelled. I guess we can't really do anything about it.
