Why movie adaptations of videogames suck

Postby Netherrealmer » 10 Apr 2020, 05:01

I will answer this. One of the main reason is the Producers and directors are not fans of the source material. They don't even play video games, They just want to cash in with the popular title. It is like the FOX MCU vs MCU. The MCU is produced by Marvel so the creators are fans of the source material. Meanwhile FOX MCU ruined X-men characters because the people who made them are not even X-men fans. That also reflects on what happens with these videogame movies.

For example are those Resident evil Movies, Paul Anderson wanted to make this zombie action movie based from Alice in Wonderland. He can't get anyone to fund it but when he get the rights of Resident evil. He decided to get rid of the actual heroes of the series:
Image

He replaced it with Alice, An overpowered Superhero inspired from his wife and played by his wife. His Alice in Wonderland movie is now in disguise of the title Resident evil.
Image

Her costume is also an Amalgamation of Jill Valentine and Ada Wong.

Resident evil is a Survivor Horror video game and not an action Superhero movie with zombies on it. He is also mean to the fans of the game and tell them to produce their own movie if they don't like his. Online there is a huge hatred between fans of the Paul Anderson movies and fans of the game.

On the sequels, He decided to add the actual game characters but turned them into Pathetic betas who Alice needs to rescue.
--
Another Reason why Videogame movies suck is the Producers and directors are given too much Liberties. The biggest example will be the Street Fighter movie. The Main character of Street Fighter is Ryu, A Wandering homeless Shotokan fighter.

Image

The movie was made in 1994, Hollywood is still racist to Asian men back then so the writers decided to demote Ryu and make Guile, A minor character the lead character because he is White Military and all American hero but they casted a Belgian Guy with thick French accent to play him..... Well least they didn't pull a "Ghost in the Shell" and have a white guy play Ryu.

Image
That movie is so ridiculous and cringy made little research about the characters and Lore.
Image

If You want a decent Street Fighter movie that embraced the lore and respect fans, Watch Street Fighter Assassin's fist. A Direct to Youtube fan movie:

(Sadly this one got dubbed in French, The original English version was gone from Youtube)
Capcom was so Impressed with this movie that the creator of Street Fighter made a Cameo. Imagine if you gave budget to the guys who made this movie.

Producers prioritizes casuals over fans. They try to make the movie appealing to people who are not fans of the source material. They have this mentality that fans will watch it anyway and All they care about are those people who buy movie tickets who are not fans of the source material.

---

The last Reason, Majority of the videogame based movies are created before social media so there is no fan backlash. Look The Sonic movie got fixed because there is a fan backlash. The technology of Social media gives fans a direct communication the people in power.

Without Social Media, We could have end up with this Ugly abomination.
Image

Instead of this amazing one.
Image

There could be hope with the future of videogame movies because fans can now express their disapproval and Video Game Industry is now bigger than movies and Music industry.

I think it is better to find a script writer, director and maybe the actor who really knows the videogame. The person should have played the videogame itself and developed a strong bond with it. He or she should have the passion and dedication for the videogame.

I would like to set an example:

One would be, Heny Cavill. Though he was not the director or the script writer of the series, The Witcher, I would say he did a decent job playing as Geralt. It was because he was a fan of the game, and the books. Overall the series was great, but surely it can improve more.

Yes,you are right. The constant feedback that game industry receives helps them in the betterment and even modifications of their characters and story plot.It is much like a two way communication now.

If you notice Alice's design, its obvious a Mixture of Ada Wong and Jill Valentine. I hate this character for existing and making the real characters of the game look pathetic.

He is infact a better Geralt than Superman because he really knows the character and a huge fan. It does make a difference if the directors and actors are fans of the material because they respect it. Unlike Paul Anderson who just want to show how hot and badazz his wife is.

Though it is not a videogame adaptation, I would also want to point out the movie, "Avatar The Last Air Bender". It was really bad. It was really obvious that everyone behind the movie did not know the original material by heart.

Have you seen The Legend of Chun-li where they casted the whitest looking Chinese woman with no hips.

They mess up the canon too. M.bison who is Thai becomes white.

Vega wears mask not because he protects his handsome face but because he is ugly.

She is a quarter chinese, quarter Indonesian and half Dutch. She is also white passing and had been playing white roles through out her career. Its like the Zoe Zaldana as Nina Simone situation since Kristin Kreuk is playing a Chinese woman from Mainland China.

Yeah. Some folks were pretty upset with Zoe Zaldana playing Nina Simone, as well as with J-Lo playing Selena. But when I was a kid, it was always white folks playing the parts of Chinese, Native Americans, Indians (from India), etc.

It wont work on the new diverse America. I can predict decades from now White roles will be ethnicity specific. What I mean is Italians will be playing Italians, Swedes will play Swedes etc.

Had they not listened to fans, they will have flopped on theaters. Listening to fans saved their movie. I hope more videogame movies will be like that.

I am not really into video games so I don't often know when a movie was based on a video game. But I am watching Korean dramas and some of them are based on webtoons. Webtoons is something brand new to me and I really enjoy the K-dramas adapted from them.

Netflix just canceled that terribad Resident Evil show. A show where they tried to make the main villain of the franchise a good guy and made him black. They made Wesker the most evil character in the franchise a loving father because he is black now. Then his daughter is a furry. Bad writing.

Image

I wish I was a Billionaire and I can buy the movie and TV rights for Resident Evil so I can make an adaptation that respects the source material. These producers held the franchise hostage.

If they want diversity, Resident evil have People of color in the franchise. Make a canonical story connected to the game's universe.

Instead of making Wesker Black and a Good Guy, They could have made a brand new adventure starring Josh Stone and Sheva Alomar if they want Black representation.

Image

or they can make Ada Wong the lead.

It is bad netflix decision. Buying Resident Evil and TV rights would not change nothing because most of people wants to faithful adaptation.
