Pop Pineapple regrowing tutorial

Postby Netherrealmer » 29 Aug 2019, 17:23

This is a fun DIY project and science experiment I want everyone try at least once on their lifetime.

Did you know there are parts of some produce we purchase in the grocery that can be replanted? Yup these fruits and vegetable parts can be grown on your backyard and you will get them for free after you eat the fleshy or edible parts. I notice many families throw away pineapple crowns little did they know they should have planted it on their backyard so they will eventually have a free pineapple.

Let's start with the Pineapple!

Phytochemicals for a healthier heart! Vitamin C for better immunity and Fiber for better digestion, Who doesn't love the benefits of pineapple. Centuries ago, Pineapple have seeds but most pineapples on the market these days don't have seeds. Thanks to some agricultural technology. Also most pineapple eaters hates seeds. You don't need seeds though if you want to plant pineapple in your backyard.

All you needed is to buy a whole pineapple fruit!

I am not talking about canned pineapples and pineapples with no crowns. I am talking whole pineapples with crowns intact!

Image

After cutting off the crown, soak the the crown in water just like this picture I had uploaded. Day by day you will notice roots growing on the bottom of the pineapple crown.

As you see I soaked the first crown in a drinking glass while the other one is soaked on a bowl because its a twin headed pineapple. I waited for few weeks and the crowns started to grow roots. Once the roots are long enough, You will dig a hole on your backyard or container planting basin and plant the pineapple crown.

This is the picture of my pineapple after few months:

(LOL at my duck decided to lay eggs on a pineapple plant)

Just leave it alone during rainy season and water it every other day during summer and you will get to harvest your pineapple after 18 months. I know it's a long wait but hey you got that pineapple crown for free. I know 18 months sounds like a long time but Pineapple is a low maintenance plant, it can take care of its own. Except during summer where it needs to be watered.

Pineapples looks very pretty so they can be your ornamental plant for 18 months.

After you harvested that pineapple, you can replant the crown and repeat the cycle. I currently have 30 crowns planted on my backyard so I will be having pineapples all year. SO whenever you buy a pineapple and you have a backyard. Try replanting the crown. Imagine this if you buy a pineapple every month and you always replant the crown, Next year you are going to have a free pineapple on a monthly basis. Pineapples are annual produce so most of the time the plant dies after harvest but there are some rare occasions where the plant grows a second pineapple.

This is all true. At first when you mentioned that you weren't talking about canned pineapples I thought, duh! But I get it now. For someone who is completely new to how planting works it's important to say. It's a waste to throw away the top but many times people don't have the space. If the space is there I'd say go for it . There's nothing like eating food from your own hands :) Nothing is missing from the instructions here, thanks!

You can also grow them in containers. My rooftop have pineapples planted in basins with soil.

That is much better than those useless ornamental plants.

I knew this, replant the crown, it's cute for pineapple. I have not enough space, only one or 2 planted so far.

Try putting some on the roof if you're that adventurous, lol. I didn't think of it until he mentioned it. That would probably take a lot of effort to get water up there and all.

I absolutely love pineapples. They are my number one fruit. They don't look like much from the outside. It looks kind of hellish. But the inside is like a slice of heaven.

I do put in a container, but it needs good soil for fruiting..haha! Take 1 years + for one fruit!:P

Yeah, it does take a while but when the fruit comes it's pure joy. I've never tried the container thing but it's a good idea I think. This way is convenient and we could have more pineapples too.

If you guys wants less waiting these are things you can replant

Green Onion bottoms, just soak it in a drinking glass with few water and it will grow back. Once there are leafy greens again you can simply harvest by cutting the green part again. It is doable for 7 harvests!
Image

You can also do it for Bokchoy bottoms, You can either plant the bottoms on a soil or just soak it in water.

That is a wonderful way to use something that we otherwise throw away and benefit from them.
The only issue I could have is of space and time for taking care of the plants.

You said this before but I was still wondering about it. Do you mean it's 100% grown in there, no sun, no outside air? I meant to ask you this earlier but just now got around to it.

You will grow them there so they can have roots. After that you will transfer them to flower pots or soil.

After thinking about it, Yeah they light bulb is enough "sunlight" for them. Window lights could work too.

This is really great and how it isn't a GM plant. I wanted to do more planting this year and since I have a pineapple crown in the kitchen, I will be planting this. It is so easy to.

@cmoneyspinner after going through this Pandemic I wanted to be as self sufficient as possible. As long as the oil industry have a hold on us, we will be on a consumer rat race.

The pandemic has given us more time to plant more and we have more time for our gardens since we are indoors.

I love pineapple but unfortunately I think it doesn't grow here in this cold weather, especially because it takes 18 months to be ready to harvest. I think I will try anyway, I didn't know it was so simple but I need to put it in a vse so it can be protected during winter.

I totally agree that we need to be self sufficient and stop depending on others to have food on our table.
