I'm a stress reduction expert - ask me anything

Postby darrensurrey » 03 Sep 2018, 20:18

(As per OldGuy's suggestion...)

With a background of over 30 years in meditation and tai chi, as well as training in reiki and Emotional Freedom Techniques and being a sports and fitness coach, I have a broad understanding of holistic health.

I have also worked in the corporate world (banking, publishing and higher education sectors).

I give talks on stress reduction using mindfulness at events and businesses in London, UK. I have also read a lot of books on buddhism and taoism which I discuss where appropriate.

You're welcome to ask me anything about any aspect of stress reduction.

(Note: I reserve the right to simply advise you to see a doctor if I suspect things require face to face and/or professional medical help; I am not a doctor or psychologist.)

Thanks for the question. In mindfulness meditation, it's about being in the present moment on purpose and without judgement. So you practice just focusing on the present moment and accepting what is going on in your life. Practice is the keyword here.

Thanks for the question (again! :) ).

When you practice mindfulness, it is about being in the present moment, just focusing on the breath and not thinking about what may or may not be about to happen. In the present moment, you might be sitting on your sofa with your tablet checking this forum. You are safe and well right now. Take a moment to appreciate this.

With mindfulness, you can also practice acceptance (of situations, life etc) and non-judgementalism (not considering things to be good or bad but to just be what they are).

I'd say that there are certainly some foods that can feel like they boost stress if you have too much of them eg things with caffeine or ephedrine in them.

Some things are said to reduce stress eg camomile and even cigarettes (for smokers) but these are more psychosomatic. With cigarettes, it's probably because the addict is feeling stressed due to the need to satisfy a craving.

Are you an educator? Right? Have you handled several teachers? What are the most difficult problems the teachers met in their job? Have you introduced them the right solution to that problem?

Thanks. Yes, of course, I don't walk around like a zombie not feeling any emotions. Mindfulness enables me to notice I'm having the emotion and do something about it before I do something else that I might regret later.

Problems in general that teachers experience? I don't train teachers in how to teach. I teach people how to reduce stress.

Sorry to hear about your breakup.

Normally, when you have a messy breakup, you will have a lot of thoughts swirling around in your head, what the other party said, how they felt about what you said, what you could have said etc. It all just brings back the emotions that don't help with healing your heart. The simplest way to calm yourself down is to focus on the breath, bringing your thoughts back to the breath every time they wander off. darrensurrey I have been going through your free mediation course and am really enjoying it. I have found the Part 3, Energy Mediation particularly beneficial and it is something that I really needed right now. Hence, I have listened to it for a few days, without moving on the Part 4.

Have you ever considered setting up a meditation playlist on Spotify? I would definitely subscribe and listen to your guided meditations there, instead of always playing the YouTube videos.

Also, what about selling your "28 Day Mindfulness Plan" in exchange for ForumCoin in our ForumCoin Exchanges section? It wouldn't cost you anything and I am pretty certain that you would get at least one sale :)
