Misleading Ad

Postby Bananaman » 26 Oct 2013, 15:14

Don't you think this and could be misleading to some people?.

Hi Dennis, are you referring to the banner ad shown in the header of that screenshot?

Those ads are placed there by Google and different members will see different ads at different times.

I think he is referring to the Google Ad that says "Get the App". Honestly, I don't think ForumCoin or Fergal has any control over what's displayed there. :P

However, would it be possible to put a frame around it while labeling it as "sponsored ad"? It might be a good idea to let people know the ads are separate from the forum.

You can block certain ads I know a forum owner who did it.

@Fergal; I've never visited a site like it or the site in the ad. I have personalised ads turned off and see that advert at more than onle location.

But that would reduce profitability. You really don't want that to happen.

I'd rather just have a small frame or box around the ads, with text that denotes the content inside the frame is an advertisement.

Well I don't want people tracking what I do then showing me adverts related to them. I'm sure one device / user who has targeted as turned off on their mobile / PC won't make much of a difference. ;)

That's how the internet is functioning now. The only way you can avoid it, is by refusing to store sensitive information on your computer. Clear your cookies/cache once in a while, and clear them before/after an online purchase. That should prevent the most invasive methods. :P

I don't see how ForumCoin is related to that matter though?

Firefox blocks tracking cookies etc. :)

Fergal said only certain users see certain ads but as I turned off personalised advertising in the android settings, and I see the and from multiple locations it can't be shown to just me?.

You probably see the ad as you are browsing via a mobile (apps typically are for mobiles) where as for desktop users, we tend not to see that ad. I personally haven't seen it using my laptop. In which case the ad only shows to mobile users viewing the site using the main style and not the (be default) mobile style with no ads. I think it is possible to block certain ads although I believe you need to know more about the ad that just what it looks like to block it. I am sure I have seen people block certain ads displaying on their site although I can remember them asking for very specific details about the ad.

Just turning off personalized results isn't going to be enough to keep ad companies from extracting information. :P They'll use everything from cookies to cache, or even your user agent to learn more about you.

I wouldn't be very concerned about it though. Clear your cache/cookies before and after transactions. Do not leave sensitive files in plain view. Use encryption and passwords. However, don't get into paranoia. :P

I agree with you on the need for privacy Dennis. :) These days, you simply can't do enough to protect your privacy.

Nevertheless, Forumcoin can't really police the internet for ads. :P
