What is that button for? I click it and it goes to an FAQ but the number on it seems to increase for some reason? What's the number related to?

It shows number of your posts per day. It include new topics and comments.

The FAQ answer actually does explain about the daily post (soft) limit and where to find your daily posts so far today. Hovering over the question mark icon will show the server time/reset time so you will know how long you have until it resets back to zero.
