Why are you so stingy?

Postby OldGuy » 16 Jun 2019, 11:57

Either the content on ForumCoin is getting worse by the day, or most members are just plain stingy when it comes to giving out reputation points.

There have been 2122 new posts entered in the last 7 days. There have been a grand total of just 92 reputation points given out for the entire week. Dividing the 92 reputation points by the 2122 posts comes out to a 4.34% average reputation score for the entire community. That is the lowest I have seen recording these stats since January 2018.

When I began recording these numbers in January 2018, the overall average for all members was just over 11.5% as the standard. The average scores have been falling ever since then.

For the last several months, the site average has been dropping to barely over 9% and is now about to drop to the 8% range.

Giving out reputation points is your opportunity to express your opinion of the quality of the content you read as you browse the content on this site. Although it is not a precise measure of quality, these resulting scores are an expression of the combined opinion of the quality of the content for each member. It becomes a quality control guideline. A score below the site average tells members they need to do better. Nearly 70% of all members are posting below average quality content based on the collective opinion of the entire community and in most cases, those scores continue to fall for everyone.

When you post content to this site, do your very best to post high quality content. Although length is not necessarily an indicator of quality, your posts need to be long enough to fully explain what you are saying. In addition, you need to include added information that will further educate future readers on the topic. Anything less is junk content.

When you see high quality content, please make a point of giving it a positive reputation point. Your opinion matters. You are limited to giving out 5 reputation points per visit. Please use them, but don't waste them.

I use the reputation scores to determine awards for improved quality content. It is becoming very rare for anyone to qualify. The reason scores improve is that those who take the time to post quality content rely on others to give out reputation points on their efforts, yet very few scores rise at all because most members are just too stingy to give them out.

So … does the content you read on ForumCoin really stink, or are you just plain stingy?

I am giving and getting (no exchange program but genuine ones or where I feel the need) So I am neither stingy nor giving anything to that doesn't deserve my rating.

I do regularly genuine content by others. However, sometimes I get a message that I cannot like another post so quickly.

I give them out especially when I come across something that I think is well said and beneficial to readers. If it's on a thread I created, it's mainly to say 'thank you for taking the time to give your input'. Sometimes rather than writing out that I appreciate the comment, I just give a thumbs up. Obviously not every response will get one but I'm not stingy with giving them out at all. Other times I'll give a positive rep to tell the member I appreciate his sense of humour. Some of the comments are worth a reaction, not necessarily a comment and I use the rep system for this. Thanks.

I don't think I'm stingy as I give them out most days but what I do find is I tend to give them out to the same people because I seem to have good communication with them and value what they say. They are also very generous to me with the rep points so I assumne they feel the same way. It's not that I have some kind of pact going on with them, it's more their comments are interesting or helpful to me.

I always appreciate every rep point I get and I suppose if I'm honest, if someone gives me a rep point I want to return the favour so I will look for a post from that person that I feel deserves a point.

I suppose I should clarify. Yes, some members do give out reputation points but it is painfully obvious that most do not. Here we are, yet again looking at the last week as another example.

For the week of 8/12 to 8/18. there were a total of 2228 posts, yet only 111 total reputation points given out. There should have been at least 223 reputation points just to reach the site average. As it is, this only averages out to a 4.98% range, which continues to drag down the entire site average, which has now fallen to just 8.98%.

Either most members are stingy in giving out reputation points, or most members seem to feel the content is not good enough to deserve them. Reputation scores continue to fall for nearly everyone at all levels.

I closely watch the scores for those with low rep point scores because I am looking for those who deserve awards. Out of the 67 members (Active in the latest 30 days) with scores well below the site average, 31 have had very slight improvements, but 35 others have had significant drops. (1 had no change). It is exceedingly rare for anyone to qualify for an award these days due to improved rep point scores. That is actually why I ask this question.

Unfortunately, the very ones who need to see this are the same ones who would most benefit from it, but are also the same group who will probably never look at this topic.

I am a new member here. Could you explain what does giving reputation point really mean? DOes this mean giving thumbs up to other members?

Yes if you see a helpful or well written post which adds value to the forum you can give it a thumbs up, known as a reputation point. When you click on the thumb it will bring up a message box where you can say why you've given the point but you don't have to. You can just put n/a instead,

PERSONALLY, I think the issue is not really being stingy, rather the issue is this:

Does the post deserve my reputation? What does it communicate and how helpful it is to the community? Once the post met these two standards, then giving my reputation is as easy as putting my food through my mouth. Hence reason why everyone on this platform should try as much as possible to post something informative and interesting that would deserve the time and effort of everyone on this platform.

Just thinking L-O-U-D
