Can We start badges for Members?

Postby SUPERSINGH » 01 Nov 2018, 14:59

I was thinking, can forum coin start different badges for members like

New members,

Well known member

veteran

and other tags that can make everyone aware that the person is posting valuable content.

I think it will a good option if Fergal and cyberfreak can consider.
Thanks <3

There have been previous discussions on this topic, but they never lead to any action.

One was way back in 2015 that suggested some recognition for donating or supporting the site. There was only one reply and it never went further.

Add a VIP/Donor/Supporter Group For People who donate.

You should make it were we get name color changes and a little thing by our name saying Donor or Supporter. If we donate money to ForumCoins.

Another topic was also started in 2015 that suggested member titles. There were a few responses, including one from Cyberfreak who suggested it was possible to add titles, but they had not addressed the issue. No one came up with acceptable suggestions, including my own at that time.

Suggestion: Membership Titles

Hi,

I noticed you dont have any titles or ranks for memberships. Is there a reason why? Who things it would be a good idea? Also it would be nice to purchase your own title.

Ranks along with an image can be shown under a users username (just above their post count) on the left of a post they make however we haven't set up any ranks yet. We can do that though. It won't offer any real benefit but it might encourage users to be a bit more active just for the better rank.

The last post on that topic was in December 2017 and nothing more has been suggested.

Any title would need to be based on specific criteria to define each range. Those who have already been banned don't need an added title to indicate that status since there is a line through their user name once banned along with the word banned directly under their user name.

It has now been just over 11 months since I started studying the site, originally to figure out what the reputation points actually mean. In that study, I have been using these titles and criteria to rate the content based on a reputation score. It is based on the calculation of dividing the total number of reputation points by the total number of posts and reading the results as a percentage.

With more than 98% of all content now included in the study, the overall site average is sitting at 9.04%. The average for those who have posted in the last 30 days is currently 9.48%. Based on this calculation, 66.53% of all members have contributed lower than average quality content.

Although it is not precise, it is generally a close indicator of quality for most members. Those who spend a lot of time in the games category have very low scores because every entry in that category no longer qualifies for any reputation points. They build up posts, but no rep points. In most cases, the gamers reputation “scores” have been in free fall most of this year.

The bigger catch is that there are a number of members who started out and received more than the usual number of reputation points when they started out, but then left the site. They ended up with an artificially high reputation score that does not represent anything close to what it would be if they contributed more content to settle in at their true level. Adding titles might be a good idea, but members should not qualify for any recognition until they have contributed at least 100 posts.

In any event, members would be encouraged to contribute higher quality posts to qualify for reputation points on their content in order to climb the ranks with this system, and all members would need to be more diligent in awarding reputation points to high quality content when they see it.

Caution also needs to be considered in applying any specific user title that does not provide any indicator of authority over any other member. Any title only applies to how well the member him or herself has done.

These are just provided as my suggestion based on my own study of ForumCoin.

Here is the range and criteria I have been using in the study of the reputation points for a “Score” and resulting “title”

Negative reputation points … -0.00% … Negative
Zero reputation points ... 0.00% … Zero
0.01% to 1.99% … 1st Grade
2.00% to 2.99% … 2nd Grade
3.00% to 3.99% … 3rd Grade
4.00% to 4.99% … 4th Grade
5.00% to 5.99% … 5th Grade
6.00% to 6.99% … 6th Grade
7.00% to 7.99% … 7th Grade
8.00% to 8.99% … 8th Grade
9.00% to 9.99% … 9th Grade
10.00% to 10.99% … 10th Grade
11.00% to 11.99% … 11th Grade
12.00% to 12.99% … 12th Grade
13.00% to 15.99% … College
16.00% to 19.99% … Educator
20.00% to 29.99% … Professor
30% and higher … Genius

By the way, the highest earned reputation score on ForumCoin is currently 56.29%.

Re: Can We start badges for Members?

We have considered this in the past however it is difficult to really come up with things that are relevant, not demeaning to users who are new/not as active, and like Oldguy says above, "Caution also needs to be considered in applying any specific user title that does not provide any indicator of authority over any other member".

Basically they need to be motivating but not to the point that users post to get a new rank to make themselves "superior" to others and make other newer users feel less important. It is kinda difficult to come up with suitable ranks in the quantity that we would need them.

Ultimately it is just a few words but from experience, users can become demotivated over all sorts of things like these and some people let their rank or position put themselves above other users when in reality a new user and a user with 10,000 should be treated the same. It is natural though that newer users will feel they are gatecrashing other peoples parties so to speak. The existence of the post count being visible is enough to cause a separation between new and old/active users.
