Sometimes I'm satisfied with 'what I've added' to a topic someone started, and I'm not really interested in hearing anything further (like that 'add your avatar and I'll give you 10 Coins'-topic, or some of the ForumGames, etc.)

Would it be possible to unfollow a thread once I decide I don't need to hear back from it? I thought maybe I could do it by erasing my post to the thread; but I can't see any way to erase my posts without "reporting" them, and I'm afraid to get those on 'my record'

Just do not check the box number 3, which reads "Notify me when a reply is posted" at the bottom of your post and that should solve your problem. The provision is there under every post you post so far. However, I am sure you can do that at a later stage if you click at the edit button. (You don't have to delete your post but clicking at edit button will give you the option to unfollow the thread)

I did that but nothing happens. That thread still appears in 'my posts'

What you are confusing is two things.

Subscribing to a topic means that you are willing to receive email notifications when replies are made to the topic. You have to explicitly opt into these and can stop them through the email, unsubscribing the the topic or managing your subscriptions in the UCP --> ucp.php?i=main&mode=subscribed

My Posts is just a list of topics you have taken part in. There isn't a way to opt in or out of these. It is just literally a list of where you have posted for your reference.
