When I first Joined ForumCoin last November, I wondered what the reputation points were all about. At the time, there was no explanation in the FAQ pages and various discussions found in topics were full of "I don't knows" and opinions from other members that really did not answer the question.
I began studying the site to find out what good they were and that study has since expanded to a lot of other details about the site.
The reputation points do not have any cash value. You cannot buy them, you cannot trade them, giving them out does not affect your own revenue and receiving a positive reputation point does not affect the recipient's revenue. However, there are times when receiving a negative reputation point comes with a financial penalty.
In general, the only value I have been able to find is that your collection of reputation points is more like a personal guide. It is telling you how the rest of the ForumCoin community views your content.
If another members reads your content and feels it is adding value to the topic, or even if they like your content for any other reason, they can give you a positive reputation point. You can do the same with other content as you read it. It is more like a value added opinion than anything else.
On the other hand, if your content is of low value, or does not add any value to the topic, or even if it just offends some other member, they can give you a negative reputation point. Fortunately, most members do not give out negative reputation points, but it can happen.
When you give out a negative reputation point, it can create hard feelings between members and there have been times they might give you a negative rep point in revenge. If you see something that is not contributing value, or find some other issue with content posted by another member, It is probably better to use the exclamation point in the triangle located near the upper right corner of the post. That allows you to report the content and let the administration handle it.
If you divide your total number of reputation points by your total number of posts and read the results as a percentage, you can view your own "score". When averaging the scores of all members for the site, it comes out to just under 10%. That generally means you need to receive at least 1 positive reputation point for every ten posts just to be average. If your own percentage is lower than that, it is like the rest of the community is telling you that you need to do better. Receiving a negative reputation point is like someone is screaming it to you.
SO, if you see a quality post that adds value to the topic, give it a positive reputation point. If you see something that you feel deserves a negative reputation point, report it so the administration can take a look and decide if a negative point is deserved.
The reputation point system is only a representative of the general opinion of the rest of the community of your content. It is just a guide to let you know how you are doing. There are no rules set in stone to tell you how to express your opinion with the reputation points. Give them to those you feel deserve them.
