Funny This Forum's Name is 'Coin' ...

Postby friendociate » 20 Oct 2018, 13:05

Okay; not "funny," but ... I don't know---'quixotic' (is that a word? ... oh :ugeek: I can't resist ... "quix·ot·ic (kwikˈsädik) ADJECTIVE exceedingly idealistic; unrealistic and impractical").

Because 'the root of the word "coin"' is relatively worthless---it's 'the shape of the tool used to stamp the pieces of metal.'

Although, 'the relatively-worthless stamping tool does make the previously-worthless metal notably valuable (rather than just possibly-useful).' And maybe that's what this forum does to us 'previously-mindless geniuses'---trains us to set our free-radical brain-cells in order and set them marching in full strength toward "usefulness!"

The subtitle (beneath ForumCoin) is 'New World Currency'---they say "money makes the world go `round," and 'ForumCoin' might help us learn to make the New World go `round---Aye?

I know this might fit better in the 'ForumCoin'-category, but I can't figure out how to get it moved nor -how to delete it (so I can copy it into the 'right' category).

Wouldn't you rather have 'ForumCash' or 'ForumChecks' or 'ForumStocks-&-Bonds'?

Coin is better than Cash or Checks or Stocks. Just my opinion. All the other sites are using the word "Coin" in their names but in comparison to the other sites this one is actually "New World Currency". It's a new world for me anyway. :D

Seems to me the name as is fits just fine.

Just a few of the known, notable cryptocurrencies:
Bitcoin, Litecoin, Namecoin, SwiftCoin, Bytecoin, Peercoin, Dogecoin, Feathercoin, Primecoin, Skycoin, Auroracoin, MazaCoin, PotCoin and there are many more.

Why change what has become the standard that anyone interested in this sort of thing will see it indicates a cryptocurrency? The name "as is" is part of what attracts visitors.

I think the owners rightly thought to give members the right idea about what they would get in return, (the coins). The names like Check, Cash or Stocks might have raised the expectation which would had reduced their interest in this site if the result was to turnout in "form of coins". Hence the Forum Coin

I notice they want users to fund this account. What exactly does that mean?

It's sort of 'a blessing and a curse'---I guess it's just a reminder that 'some' (maybe 'most') of the people here aren't here "to read interesting literature" so much as they're here to 'read just-enough-to-respond-to-it.'

I think it means 'to buy ForumCoins' (like investing in your own company's stock to 'get the ball rolling').

I think the name is apt for the site and it very much justifies the expectation of users here. Forum Cash or Forum Stock etc. would have been misleading.

Interesting! What's the story behind the Forumcoin? Where Fergal got that name? Many name sites he can used but why he chose Forumcoin?!

When you 'fund your account,' you're buying "ForumCoins"---credits you can exchange for various rewards & services offered online. Why would you buy them rather than earn them? I don't know, but I think it has something to the effect of "priming the pump"---reassuring your referrals & referrer that 'you're doing the work'

Thanks everyone for your interest, I previously wrote about how we came up with the ForumCoin concept in this post, quoted below:

My interest has been in forums and especially those with an online currency element. I purchased a small (approx 1,700 posts) forum in 2004 called HostBidder. After buying it we added a forum currency called HB, which members could use to purchase website hosting and domain names. This was long before BitCoin, which wasn't released until Jan 2009.

The next forum I owned was ForumPromotion, which is where I met CyberFreak. We grew that to the point where it had over one million posts and it had a forum currency called FP which members could use to purchase content, promotion and other services for their forums.

I also created and grew BusinessAdviceForum (BAF) which had a forum currency called BAF Cash. BAF was not the most active forum but it did very well in the search engines for competitive business related search terms and became an excellent source of advice for anyone starting or running a small business.

...

My interest in forums that included a forum currency lead to the idea of ForumCoin, when CyberFreak agreed to help with starting the forum it was a great help as he had a lot of the required technical knowledge, which I lacked.

Does that answer the questions asked?

I'm reminded of ... I think it was Og Mandino's The Greatest Salesman in the World, where 'the title-character' gained success in sales by selling 'the currency he created.' (Or maybe I'm mixing that up with another story)

Then I'm reminded how Jesus separated 'money' and 'spiritual wealth': he asked "whose picture is on the money?" when the reply came with the answer 'Caesar,' He retorted, "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and give to God what is God's."

Sounds like a very interesting book, have you read it? Did you read each scroll for 30 days as per the book's instructions?

Probably (it was years ago, when I was a teenager and/or in my 20's).

I do frequently quote its scrolls mantras---particularly "This Too Shall Pass"---I shall laugh, for man is the only creature on earth who can laugh. (I know other animals can imitate laughter, but they can never be inspired to laugh in the same way humans can  ) I shall laugh at my troubles, my triumphs, my good fortune and my sorrow, for THIS TOO SHALL PASS.
