Bumping Old Threads

Postby skysnap » 11 Oct 2018, 16:40

I don't want to name specific member but that member seems to be bumping 3 year old thread. I am not sure what is the reason behind that. I raised this query because I know bumping old irrelevant threads is not good for SEO. Any thread that goes on for 3 years is different than the thread which is abandoned and is now bumped. It happens that we don't see the date and end up commenting on them. I have done that and realized today that these threads are too old. I think that member needs to be notified on not to bump old threads.

Just posting this for mods and the admins to see if extremely old threads from 2015 are being bumped.

I agree, if they are that old, then the posts should be locked or removed, but thats only my opinion of course :)

There are two types of old threads, timeless threads and obsolete threads. People are bumping obsolete threads. Who the heck talks about Chatabout in 2018. Bumping a thread about something that is still relevant though is no issue.

I have seen that too and accept that I too answered in one of them after a couple of fresh comments but when I realized that the thread was 3 years old- I edited my post and made a note that I did that by mistake. I think that member is digging out old threads for a purpose.

I see that too often before but i cant remember the member name. cause its Not only one member who do that thing. i remember before i Remind a member that hes commenting in a 2014 or 2015 thread. but i dont have idea if he/she replied. in my opinion everyone should make a newer thread or just comment to a newer post.

I'm probably the guilty party. But quite frankly I'm bored with going to the same old current threads. (Old and current at the same time? :? ) Anyway! I came here last year (2017) and this forum is about 6 years old. That means I've missed about 5 years worth of posts! I'm sure there were lively discussions going on before I got here. So I Google a specific term or phrase for this site and see what pops out in the search results. If there's something interesting and I want to add my comment, I add it. Yeah. It bumps the thread. But hey! I didn't build this system. That's the way the system works. I can't change that. But if I just got here in 2017 and I want to add something to the thread that's dated 2014, is there a rule that says I can't? Some of the old threads are interesting.

P.S. Not guilty about Chatabout! I don't know what that is.

Actually this thread is all about old posts which are absolutely irrelevant now and left open because a moderator did not lock it. As far relevant threads are concerned, these threads are never old imho

There is also the issue of wondering if we have already posted in those threads.

The quote above sums up the issue very well. There are times when it is relevant to bump an old thread and there are times when it is now. We have recently given a member a warning for bumping an old thread about a site that no longer exists. We don't lock old threads because we don't now when the topic might become relevant again and warrant a reply.

If you see an "obsolete thread" being bumped, the most helpful thing you could do for the community is report the post, that way the forum staff can deal with the issue, inform the member of the issue and close the topic if necessary.

Thanks

I have once replied to one old thread as there were some fresh comments on it. I failed to check the date of the thread and my post was totally irrelevant in current time. I got a negative reputation for that and I think I deserved that. Now I am being cautious to check the date of thread and then reply.

Yes, I know that! I have been warned to respond to that thread! I never had any idea about this thing as we encounter many old discussions popping up all of a sudden on sites like Mylot! So I too responded the thread when I have seen it surfaced up. Now I learnt a lesson that we can always respond to timeless thread even if it old, so long it is adding some value to the site! Obsolete threads carry no point to respond! Thanks!

One more thing, there is nothing wrong about bumping threads but people, after bumping multiple old threads. Please bump one of the new threads you buried. Especially the ones with no replies at all. It is frustrating when you made a 5 minute old discussion people never read yet in page 2 because someone decided to bump 20 threads from 2013. There needs to be some sort of balance.
