There have been several suggestions for adding categories in the past. I have made some myself. Each time this idea has been presented, one of the administrators has responded that they prefer not to add more categories; apparently because it seems to litter the site with confusion.
As the content increases, it becomes harder to find content you are interested in. The more threads a site has, the greater the importance of adding categories to keep them where they can be found. It also becomes more important for the members to put the new threads in the right places, which is an apparent problem for many members even now.
I was active on another site in the past that had an index of nearly 525 categories when I joined. It had expanded to over 850 categories by the time I was no longer involved. However, there were also over 8 million threads on that site. That was an average of 9411 threads per category. Stuff was all over the map in the wrong places and it became even harder to find content you knew was there. The moderators were unable to keep up with the idiots.
As of this post, there are only 416,522 posts on 18,703 threads on this site. There are 8 main category sections and 8 subsections here right now. That means there are only an average of 2337 threads per main category with many of them already split up amongst the subsections. The article section only has 1150 topics right now.
If you have not noticed, there have been many posts from administrators who have moved a thread to the correct category because many members can't seem to get it right even as it is now. When you add more categories, it adds a lot of work for the moderators to constantly move threads to the correct category. There is a lot to consider before adding categories. It is always possible, but really needs to be carefully calculated before taking action.
For now, you can find just about any topic that exists by using the search system, accessed by the magnifying glass at the far right end of the top line of links. That is a lot less complicated for those who do the work of running and maintaining the site, and ultimately makes it easier to find that elusive content.
