A FC app?

Postby Spontaneo » 27 Dec 2024, 21:46

@Fergal,

I am wondering, for in the future, if we could have a FC app? When I attempt to work on FC via the website on my cellular phone, the print is so small that I can barely see.

Could this be a New Year project?

Thank you so much and you are awesome! ;) ;)

I think the problem is ForumCoin is unfortunately using a pretty awful mobile theme when loading the forum on the phone.
The other problem is, when requesting to see desktop site, ForumCoin is also using a theme that is not mobile responsive. So you can't even make a simple webview app either. One of the flaws of Brads early designs when he first started. (The designer of the ForumCoin theme) TBF, phpbb wasn't very mobile friendly when this design was first made. I still talk to Brad too. He's gone on to do some amazing stuff.

Back to the root issue, I think ForumCoin needs to upgrade all sorts of software, addons, and themes to get mobile responsive. Either that, or replace the software all together. Either way, it is going to be a pretty big task. I'm pretty sure there's some custom work on the forum that Fergal may not (correct me if I'm wrong?) have the knowledge to update himself.

However, we are going into 2025 now. I think it may be time to really consider taking the steps to get this forum into the modern web.
1) Notifications. I can't believe not having alerts was the norm a little over a decade ago. When Xenforo launched with Alerts, it was a game changer. I forget how much I take alerts for granted when I visit other sites until I get back on forumcoin and remember the lack of system. Now, all forum software has notifications/alerts including the updated phpBB software.
2) Mobile first. Most of the web browses through their phone now. However, when I owned IndexForum, I was shocked to see over 70% was still browsing through desktop. And IndexForum shared a lot of the same users as ForumCoin. With that said though, Google has been taking a mobile first approach since 2016. You need to be able to have proper mobile responsiveness on your site, and the current mobile theme doesn't fill that need.
3) You can do alot more with the modern credit systems. Including the way Fergal has it set up on FC. It's definitely challenging getting it set up though, I've gone through those pains :P

Thank you @Jordan for explaining. I appreciate it. @Fergal, what are the chances of upgrading? I do not want to seem greedy. There are days when I am out without my laptop and could still be productive if I had a FC app on my cellular phone. Doing so could even attract more members, yes? Thank you and I look forward to your reply.

You can check the mobile mode and this way you don't have to zoom in and out all the time

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and feedback. I agree that we are overdue an upgrade on ForumCoin. As Jordan says that involves a lot of custom work. Hopefully, we will be able to complete an upgrade in 2025.

That would be great to one day have an app for this forum. Most of the time I am working or busy with house stuff where I don't have time to log onto my laptop

I personally really like this forum the way it is, even on mobile. When on my phone I just use desktop mode and pinch my fingers to zoom on what I want to read. I understand that not everyone likes the way it is set up now, but myself personally I've seen this forum the way it is for over 10 years now, I would find it offputting if they completely changed the style of it now.
