Why do most laptops overheat and how can you prevent it?

Postby kat82 » 02 Aug 2025, 08:47

For the different laptops I have used featuring different brands and types, most of them produce heat that is enough to burn a mattress like material. Am wondering how one can prevent such heat?

You need to keep the fan outlets on the laptop clear, so that the fans can do their job and get rid of the warm air inside the laptop. For that reason it can be dangerous to put a laptop down on a softer surface such as a mattress. Your laptop is much less likely to overheat, if the fan vents are clear and not to close to any obstruction.

Check if the fan is properly opened or if it is faulty. In most cases it might be that you are running a software the laptop can't really handle.

Even when I put it on the table, still it heats. It produces much heat and it's not on a single machine but multiple ones.

Maintaince is key to. If you have 5 years old laptop, you should change thermal paste. Nothin can't last forever.

True every gadget has it's designed lifespan. Even if you treat it well, it will only last longer but still requires changes.

Limit heavy processing tasks if the laptop is overheating.

I have learnt that if we want a heavy duty laptop, which does not heats, we should get a Gaming Laptop.
They are good at producing less heat.
Even I wanted to buy a new laptop that does not heats much, but did not find such a laptop in my budget.
I reckon that we might need regular cleaning and maintenance to keep our laptop heating issues in check.
And better to use on a Table.
