I don't recall when I first opened a gmail account. It had something to do with some program I wanted to use at the time but I never had any need for it after that. I never used the account. I received an email notice on my regular email account that my gmail account was about to be deleted because it had been years since I used it.
If I wanted to keep it I had to respond within a few days. I never did and I never heard anything more from them. Pretty sure the account was closed simply because I had not used it for years. I suppose they eventually review and delete the unused accounts just to clean up their own records.
Seems you don't have to do anything to remove it. Just don't use it and they will eventually close it for non use.
