Are people skipping the internet?

Postby mrki444 » 13 May 2025, 18:19

Something strange is happening to the Internet
Last year, ChatGPT was the 15th most visited site in the world. Now it's #5.
It just passed Reddit, Amazon, and Whatsapp, and it's still climbing. Every other spot in the top 10 is down. Wikipedia fell by almost 6% in one month (March to April).
ChatGPT is quietly swallowing traffic, which means fewer clicks on blogs, forums, and even search engines...
It's almost as if people are skipping the Internet altogether.
Because they are.
For millions, ChatGPT is no longer a tool, but an interface.
Look closely at this graph. This isn't normal growth, it's a changing of the guard. One interface is taking over while the old one quietly fades away.

I think now with premium version they can get almost all real time news. Also if you want latest news, then install specific app and turn notifications.

Looks like people are finding it easier to get answers and information directly from AI rather than searching through different websites.

The rise of ChatGPT has been dramatic. It has come from nowhere, to being a tool that almost everyone uses, in a very short space of time.

There are so many things that I used Google for in the past, that I now do on ChatGPT. When I have a question on something technical that I want to figure out for work, ChatGPT is now my first port of call.

People aren't skipping the internet. AI has revolutionized how stuff works. By people accessing results and answers to their queries without visiting a real blog is enough to tell. Bloggers are crying traffic tanking just like I do. From $300 monthly to $10 due to limited traffic. BTW, Bing is no where on the list EH!

Dated or just plain wrong (AI halucinations).

Some of it definitely is. However, it can still be very helpful. I use it all the time at work and the results are pretty good. It helps me to learn how to complete new tasks and solve new technical problems much quicker than I could without it. My real concern is that my job will be done completely by AI in the not so distant future.

ChatGpt often give make things up but Perplexity is better since it gives you source of information. Perplexitx will replace Google.

People prefer using ChatGPT cause they feel it's faster, i even know of some persons who just chat with it like they are chatting some random person. Weird though.

It's definitely handy for so many things. If I'm lazy to do a write up on anything at all, I look to AI then tidy up whatever it throws up. However, I can't help but worry that it's replacing me very fast. I do translation and editing/proofreading work, both of which are now being done by AI. Even virtual teaching is no longer a secure job. The company I work for now has its own :shock: :(

Soon, Perplexity.AI, Gemini and others could also climb.
However, the brand recall value of ChatGPT is quite high.
My fellow developers often say
"Hey let's look up this Technical issue on ChatGPT and try to get a solution ! "

People like me who try not only ChatGPT but also Perplexity.AI or others as well are in minority.

It is like people almost drawing a parallel of

Browser -> Chrome

Search Engine -> Google

They are not much interested in Brave, Duckduckgo, Startpage etc.

Also, Perplexity is coming up with its browser Comet.
OpenAI is planning its own browser.
So Internet won't be skipped but the browser landscape will alter in a dramatic way.

When you ask for it under your command, chatGPT too shows the source.

Not gonna lie, chatGPT makes things a lot easier for most people, instead of using a search engine where you get multiple links you have to click and so on, chatGPT is straight to the point.

It's possible, it's already happening. I know someone who can't even do anything without using AI
