Plans for a low cost Student centric laptop by Microsoft

Postby ptrikha21 » 30 Oct 2021, 14:58

Microsoft is planning to bring a new Student centric and affordable Intel Celeron N 4120 processor based laptop, probably priced below $400.
The OS would be different and the configurations would be just sufficient to do productive work.

I think such a laptop would be much needed and welcomed the world across.

$400 might be sounding big due to the current exchange rate in India, but may be they might price it below that price for India.
May be around Rs. 22 to 25K.

Their Surface laptops are at least $1000+ so a $400 laptop from them is pretty good. I guess they want to compete with Chromebooks, but CBs are only $200~. Unless they have something that significantly puts them above CB, I can't imagine why students will want to get their product over CBs.

These items usually drops price when exported to Asia. A 60 dollar videogame in the US is only 20 dollars in my country. They base the price on cost of living.

Buying laptop of 22 to 25K is not possible for most of students who are living in villages and studying in government schools

Some people like to go for Microsoft name, so that could be a plus else you are right; as Chromebooks are more attractive price wise.

Except things like iPhone which are costlier at PPP in India than in US, until recently.
Plus now iPhones are starting to getting manufactured in India as well.

In the US, Google and Microsoft are about the same status-wise. So I find it hard to imagine people will go for the Microsfot name for $200 more, lol. But maybe that is not the case in other countries.

Microsoft sounds very good to many people and i know many students would like to be associated with it in every way. so bringing up laptops that will be affordable to them is a plus and will definitely be embraced. I like the idea now that many students are doing virtual studies.

Yes, affordable laptops would help many, else many folks' parents have to go for Loans/EMIs options.

May be things are changing a bit here as well. However, as of now, OS from Microsoft would still be more preferred than that of Google.
