Playstation officially killed the physical format

Postby gwolf666 » 02 Jul 2026, 16:20

Yes, you read that right, PlayStation will no longer create physical games; now they will only be digital and available through their store. This is bad because there will be no more collector's editions, much less anything like that. The only company that still has physical formats is Nintendo; everyone else is digital only. What do you think about this?

Well, in your case it won't affect you, but are you aware that if the store disappears, you don't actually own any games and you won't be able to play any games you bought digitally again? When you buy physical copies, you can play the games whenever you want, whereas when you buy everything digitally, if the store disappears, you lose access forever. There are exceptions, for example, buying games on GOG for PC avoids this problem because there you actually own the game, but in other stores, for example, the PlayStation Store, you don't own the game; you only buy access to it. Do you understand?

Not a fan of digital only. I always enjoy picking up physical copies of games to be able to play them as desired and display them in my home for all to see (even if "all to see" is mostly just myself lol). For the games I'm really excited about, I like being able to pre-order the collector editions too when I'm able. If digital's the way the future is going though, I guess I'll just have to accept it.

For what it's worth, I don't completely hate the idea of digital only, just if I have the choice between a digital version and a physical version, I usually almost always choose the physical.

To be fair, going digital will also favor them since it will cut down cost for them.

This is true, but I think it also makes me wonder how prepared companies will be for the influx of downloads on launch day for bigger releases. I feel like I've heard over the years that things can be slow on day 1 because everyone's trying to get the game, and things just start crashing because of everyone trying to do the same thing at the same time.

Lol yes that's another issue, the internet becomes slow cause everyone is using it at the same time. I guess some persons might have to wait till maybe midnight to get a good speed.

But do you understand that if the company or the store disappears, you won't be able to play your digital games anymore? In fact, PlayStation just removed 500 movies from its store, and the people who bought them can no longer watch them. It's not like in the PS2 era when you put in your DVD and played whenever you wanted. The same thing happens with platforms like Steam, Epic Games, etc. If the platform ceases to exist for no reason, you won't be able to play your games.
