Huawei phones to shift from Android to homegrown OS from 2025

Postby Angie10 » 21 Dec 2024, 14:17

With the new HarmonyOS Next, Chinese tech giant Huawei takes a bold step to reduce reliance on Google and assert independence in a tech space shaped by US sanctions.

Back in 2019, Huawei was caught in the crossfire of escalating U.S.-China tensions. The Trump administration placed Huawei on an export blacklist, severing the Chinese tech giant’s access to essential U.S. technologies, including Google’s Android.

This forced Huawei and other Chinese smartphone brands to remove Google apps from their devices, creating a critical void for global users. In response, Huawei introduced HarmonyOS—a hybrid operating system built on Android’s framework—as a stopgap measure.

Fast forward to November 2024, and the company has taken a decisive step, announcing its complete departure from Android with HarmonyOS Next now standing as a fully independent, Android-free operating system. The Chinese tech giant believes that its HarmonyOS Next – reportedly running on 16% of smartphones sold in China – has a chance of shaking up the industry.

Are you guys excited by this new development? Let me know your thoughts!

This seems to be a path breaking development.
Countries that are wary of Chinese expansion in Economic spheres might still try to keep Huawei out.
Yet many other countries might be good for Huawei's expansion.
Let us see how things fare going further.

I don't believe that Huawei served as a spy to China. It exists in the figment of America government's imagination because Huawei were becoming a real threat to Apple.

If HarmonyOS Next succeeds in attracting developers and users, it could completely change the way the smartphone market is. Currently, Android and iOS dominate, and having another major competitor could bring more competition, innovation, and perhaps even better prices for consumers.

I have in my whole life used 1 Huawei phone. Yes, the battery and auto application install made me take a leave and many years down the road I have never reconsidered it. May be with the new OS, some changes will occur and will may be retry it. Cant wait to see what is new.
