When you die

Postby Jem Smith » 26 Jan 2025, 22:32

Have you thought about how you want your body to be disposed of when you die? Do you want to be buried, or cremated, or something more unusual? Some people are buried at sea. Some have their ashes put into fireworks to make a fireworks display for the mourners at their funeral. Some people have their loved one's ashes made into a diamond to wear as jewellery.

If you want to buried, do you have a burial plot?

Family circumstances ended up planning for my final resting place before I was born. A brother died a crib death and my parents bought a graveyard family plot for 6 way back then. My brother was in his place and then grandma died. She took slot number 2. And then I showed up. As my parents and siblings shared my childhood, an uncle kicked the bucket and he took slot number 3.

My brothers each took their turns getting married and a few kids popped up here and there. They each bought a family plot near their homes for hubby and wife plus a few spares, so there were still few spots left. Dad left next (4) taking a spot and then mom (5). I never did get hitched and there was just one spot left so the plan is that last spot (6) is mine. Reserved and paid for since the early 1950s. Not much planning to do, its already set up. It's kinda weird because I never lived in that town and not likely any family member will ever drop in for a visit. None of my remaining family members live within 1000 miles of the place. Once my parents moved from that area the only time any of us have been there is for a funeral.

As per the culture, it will be cremated. I am not aware of people keeping the ashes in a diamond ring

It's a thing. I don't know anyone who has done it though.

I absolutely DO NOT want to be buried, so I'll definitely be cremated. All but one of my immediate family members also prefer cremation. I can't bear the idea of maggots crawling all over and gnawing away at my body  And yes, I know I'll be dead but still!

Most people here (Australia) who have loved ones cremated either scatter the ashes somewhere that was special to the person or keep them at the memorial gardens - there is a wall you can have the ashes interred in with the loved one's name carved on the outside. Some also keep the ashes at home in an urn.

I want to be burnt to ashes so that I won't exist in any form again.
