Selling microgreens as business

Postby kaka135 » 10 Oct 2019, 19:19

I am learning to grow microgreens, and while I was searching for more information about it, I found many posts mentioning that selling microgreens is a good business. Microgreens are easy to grow and they can be sold within 10-20 days, and I read that they are expensive.

I am not thinking of selling microgreens, but just curious if anyone is interested in this business or is already doing it.

I think this is the first time heard of it. I may have to do some search and see if this is something we have and has some demands.

Wow, the wonders of modern technology! I too haven't heard of this before. I'm not really interested in this sort of thing as a business but from a consumer's standpoint, I'd be curious about the health benefits and indeed the implications, will these microgreens actually offer any nutritional value etc?

Though this is nt a new concept and it has been there in India since 1980, I have never given a try as there are about 30 plants that can be grown like this and we need to have special seeds which ae available on line! Yes, if one is interested he/she can make good money as the leaves of such plants are used as Salads in 5 star hotels!

I too think there is lack of information and something needs to be said before we can judge on this point. Most likely it can be pretty difficult to find out considering regional names for this could be different.

From the word microgreen it may mean small as in micro size and the green is about plants or something like that.

The micro greens are the vegetable greens that are cut or harvested just after the cotyledon leaves develop. They are mainly have market for the people who are interested in the nutrition. These products are used as visual or flavor ingredient primarily in the top rated restaurants.

Two comments stand out to me: expensive and top rated restaurants. If they are expensive and they end up in top rated restaurants then should the grower expect a nice profit margin?

The concept of microgreens hasn't really caught up in Asia as a whole, I tried selling lettuce here and no takers for those. I ended having to give away free or eat them myself. LOL

Growing is one topic, getting the channel to sell it is another topic, both need time to learn and explore, never an easy task to make wealth.

Even I am hearing about microgreens for the first time. Initially I thought it had to do something with either green energy or electronics. After Googling, I found that Microgreens are young vegetable greens that are approximately 1–3 inches (2.5–7.5 cm) tall. Undoubtedly, it could turn out to one of profitable hobby-turned-to-business.

In any business, it is always the market that matters. Whatever you produce the market will determine if you can earn or not.

Since they are expensive and used in top rated restaurants they have limited scope in getting used up! As these things are served as Salads mainly. So I think once if they are produced in bulk they may lose these adjectives attached to making them special and they may become normal like other vegetables!
