Well if they had brought up "feed cost" as part of the reason for price hikes, I might have considered it. But they didn't say that. They clearly said the price of eggs was high because of bird flu! At least that's what I heard on the news reports I listen to. (I know in America you might get different news reports about the same thing.) Frankly, I think they're price-gouging. But since I can't prove it, my solution to the problem is not to buy eggs. I am NOT paying $7 for an 18-peck of eggs! I got my principles!

Not forgetting the sunk- & hidden costs (sunk include the hens themselves, the enclosure for the hens; hidden include the time cleaning up after them, the veterinary costs, the time it takes to get their food (otherwise FREE, as @Netherrealmer suggests).)

A had a friend who used to have hens. They used to give them tons of eggs. I wish I had hens. But they do provide free eggs. And if you get a lot.. then you can sell for big profits. Think about it

Ever you ever tried egg substitutes?
My son has a restricted diet so he bought some. You pour it out of the carton and it cooks up just like eggs.
I never calculated if it was cheaper to use egg substitutes or real eggs.

But now I'm thinking it's probably cheaper.

I haven't tried 'the ones in the carton,' but I DO often buy breakfast burritos out of the freezer section. (They're made with real eggs, but it's faster than 'scrambling your own egg-mix and wrapping them with meat & spices in your own tortillas' )

If you look around the grocery store's freezer-section, they might have some made with egg-substitute too.

I think we need to have some organic chicken that lay eggs even it is not given some commercial feeds but rather on what is the available food for them in our surroundings because it can help us to minimize cost for commercial eggs.

I blame the DIY trend ... people looking-up 'how much things actually cost,' then figuring they can get it cheaper if they DIY, then figuring they can make money if they sell it (for more than it costs them but less than the other guy sells it for), then the original guy buys 'rights to the materials' and has to boost his prices, then the DIY-ers have to charge more ... but who's really to-blame?

I think it's something they do with the immune-system; like I said, I get sick if I don't have at least one egg every day-or-so.
