What was the first CD or cassette you ever bought?

Postby ragdollie » 09 Oct 2024, 09:53

I'm just old enough to have been in a generation where buying physical copies of music was still popular as I was growing up. The newest generation, gen alpha, won't have this experience I think, since streaming music online is more common now. I love asking people my age or older what the first piece of physical music they ever bought was, I get a wide range of answers :D

Mine, (embarrassingly) was one of Taylor Swift's older albums. I'm not really a Taylor Swift fan, and I wasn't back when I bought it either, I just really wanted to buy a CD. I still have it. Nowadays I still buy and collect CDs and albums, since they're still a really big thing in k-pop, which is one of my favourite genres.

What was the first CD or cassette, or vinyl you ever bought?

Back in the 90s McDonalds had a promotion where you could get a cassette of popular songs of the summer with a meal (like a Happy Meal, but for adults) so I bought one. I still have that cassette, although I no longer have anything to play it on. It was 80s and 90s Aussie rock, like Ratcat.

This was on there.

Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits is the first album I remember buying. The guitar sound from Money for Nothing sounded excellent on my walkman speakers. That's a long time ago :)
