HBO Max added ASL support

Postby Netherrealmer » 28 Jun 2024, 17:40

Max always have subtitles option for deaf people but a lot of the deaf community have hard time reading subtitles, so Max just recently added an American Sign language option. If you choose this option, Instead of subtitles, you can now have a live interpreter, a black-clad woman who's a maestro of hand gestures, translate the action on screen. It is the first platform I think who decided to add this to movies. Its not yet implemented on tv shows but it will be added soon.

This feature is a game-changer for streaming services, putting HBO Max at the forefront of accessibility. Just a heads up, TV shows haven't gotten the ASL treatment yet, but it's on the way. And for those who prefer the classic subtitle route, fear not, you can keep it old school and still use subtitles.

Glad HBO Max is doing this, but it seems like it'd cost them a lot of money to do this for all of their content. Wonder if they'll actually go through with the plan, or if it's just a gimmick where they'll do a couple of movies and then stop.

I'm trying to imagine Game of Thrones with ASL support. That High Valyrian and Dotharki will be interesting.

I wish my grandmother was around to see this. I never would have thought about this, but it's pretty awesome by the looks of it. This will revolutionize TV and Movies for the deaf community.

Wow, this is a great move to add such a feature for people to keep glued to the Tele and have a wonderful experience. I think that all shows like what has been said that it will be done soon. ASL support is a must for all Tele programmes.

I think A.I character can make costs lower. Upload script and time frame and A.I character will mimic all ASL signs.

I am still wondering which technology HBO Max would deploy to make this ASL be available in real time on TVs. Would it even be worth the cost at the end?

I know that HBO Max is trying to be all inclusive for all, despite their hearing impairment. Integrating ASL into mobies is a good move. And one that I hope would also be mainstream soon.

I salute Max for the introduction of the sign language on the movie and the entire entertainment industry at large. This would engage the deaf community on the entertainment scene.

How they will choose character who mimic ASL signs? I see black girl when white girl is on screen. Why not change characters during movie?
