The Next Romeo and Juliet

Postby Netherrealmer » 07 Apr 2024, 20:17

Romeo and Juliet are public domain characters. The tragic story of a 16 year old boy and 14 year old girl who committed suicide because their families are feuding was forced to us by our English teachers to study back in Highschool. The movies kinda made the English literature classes more tolerable.

The critics considered Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey as the most iconic Romeo and Juliet.

Some notable portrayals are:
Leonardo Di Caprio and Claire Danes, Their Romeo and Juliet is set in the 90s California instead of Medieval Verona Italy

Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth brought it back to the original setting

--------------
We also had some weird versions like:

Romeo Must Die where Jet Li and Aliyah are the Romeo and Juliet but its an action movie and they didn't commit suicide.
Image

Warm Bodies is a movie where Romeo is a Zombie and Juliet zombie hunter. Romeo ate Juliet's boyfriend so his romantic feelings for her transfers to him.
----------------

There is a new Romeo and Juliet movie. Tom Holland, Yes Spiderman will play Juliet and Francesca Amewuda Rivers will play Romeo. Yes they gender swapped the characters and Romeo got race swapped.

The actress who will play Romeo got a series of death threats.

Juliet had been played by non white actresses before. Hailee Steinfeld is multiracial, Olivia Hussey is Latina, Aliyah is black and there are no complaints.

I guess having a Male Romeo triggers antiwokes. The antiwokes have no idea when Romeo and Juliet stage play was written hundreds of years ago, Juliet was played by men because women were banned from acting and singing by the church. Juliet is 14 years old and Tom Holland looks too old to play one. Oh its not a movie, its a stage play.

Romeo and Juliet is a classic story and it is interesting that it is still being remade so many years after Shakespeare first wrote it. I wonder if any modern stories will still be read and remade 400 years from now.

William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays in his life. Among all, he successfully showed many sides of our society in it.
