Top Movie MacGuffins That Left Audiences Guessing

Postby Yusra » 15 Dec 2023, 15:20

In films, a MacGuffin refers to an object, device, or event that drives the plot and motivates the characters, despite having little other relevance to the story. Some of cinema’s most enduring movies have centered around tantalizing MacGuffins that hook the audience and leave them guessing until the very end. Here are some of the greatest cinematic MacGuffins that left viewers perplexed and wanting more.

The Briefcase in Pulp Fiction

Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 classic Pulp Fiction remains iconic for many reasons—the nonlinear storytelling, violence, deep dialogue. But the shining suitcase’s glimmering contents remain an enticing enigma. The case motivates bloody conflict between characters but Tarantino never reveals what’s inside, driving fevered speculation from captivated audiences for decades. Theories range from Marsellus Wallace’s soul to gold bars to a lightbulb. But like the characters, viewers get no glimpse of the contents.

The Ark of Covenant in Raiders of The Lost Ark

Throughout Steven Spielberg’s 1981 adventure, Indiana Jones races Nazis to secure an ancient religious relic rumored to kill any who gaze upon it. The biblical Ark provides a tantalizing motivation for Indy’s death-defying exploits and the climactic facemelting finale proves its power. But the Ark itself gets little screen time, with Spielberg keeping the mysterious artifact behind a tantalizing veil.

Citizen Kane’s Rosebud

Consistently topping best movie lists, 1941’s Citizen Kane centers entirely around finding defining the eponymous newspaper magnate’s dying words “Rosebud”. Reporters comb through Kane’s life searching for meaning behind the word that sets an enigmatic tone. While the reveal provides insightful commentary on Kane’s lonely life, “Rosebud” is more purposed as a nagging bit of mystery that drives intrigue around the wealthy publisher’s relationships.

Dedicated filmmakers recognize MacGuffins ability not just to drive plots forward but keep audiences guessing with questions rather than answers. Whether glimpse briefly or unseen entirely, these well-placed cinematic mysteries embed wonder and speculation in moviegoers minds for decades on end.

The briefcase in Pulp Fiction was inspired by the one in the old Noir film 'Kiss Me Deadly'. In that movie the case had uranium in it (or plutonium? Something radioactive, it's been a long time since I watched it). It does make for an interesting McGuffin.
