Lord of the Rings Remake

Postby RianK » 15 Nov 2023, 04:56

So i just heard, today the 15 of November, 2023, that someone in Hollywood wanted to do a LotR remake, which I find appalling.

I did do some research on that topic, and I found the rumor was true and that (luckily) what ever it will be it will not be a remake.....so I'm guessing maybe a sequel?....or a prequel?....or something in between, it's anyone's guess, apparently.

Point is I don't really understand why.

Anyone? Any thoughts?

The surge in spin-offs, remakes, and adaptations of Lord of the Rings can be attributed to one key factor—J.R.R. Tolkien's passing 50 years ago. With just two more decades until his works enter the public domain, his descendants are motivated to capitalize on their rights and maximize earnings from this billion-dollar property. Imagine if your grandfather authored a highly popular novel half a century ago, and you knew that in 20 years, you wouldn't receive any more royalties from its earnings. It's understandable that his descendants would seek to leverage these remaining 20 years to make the most out of the opportunity.

I have not read about it so far and I am totally unaware of it. Anyways, it would be exciting. I have to explore and find out more.

I never read the books of Lord of the Rings, I saw the movies but I don't consider myself a fan of history.

They're not at all historical. They're fantasy. There are elves, dwarves, dragons etc.

I have not read the book but watched the movie. It's a fantasy. I see many remakes and spin off coming for the successful and popular ones these days.

So every story even author protect all rights goes in public domain? How about company names? Will Apple brand name become also free public domain?

Only fiction and books becomes public domain. If a writer is dead for 70 years. The book becomes public domain and the descendants will stop receing royalties and will lose the rights. A book can become public domain earlier if writer have no living heir like what happen to Winnie the Pooh

I also do not understand the reason for the remake of Lord of the rings. Most of all the books they end up re making do not turn out well.

Company names are a different thing. All art (visual art like paintings and photos, fiction etc) eventually becomes public domain. It happens a certain number of years (it's different in different countries) after the death of the creator.

True, most of the remakes they have done so far didn't really go well. Its just better to leave things they way they are rather than spoil our memory.

They must referesh entire story so it become popular again. There is few similar franchise who take audience attention and LOTR must back audience back.
I guess they could do on purpose 'bad decisions' and join trend hate watch. (@Netherrealmer correct me if expression is wrong).
