American television: prepare for months of nothing but Reality tv and reruns because writers are on strike

Postby Netherrealmer » 03 May 2023, 22:17

TV and Movie writers are livid! They wanted to have a raise because they want better pay and royalties from earnings of streaming services. They believe they deserve royalties. Some tv networks do not want to listen and think those writers on strike can be replaced by non union writers or be replaced by chat gpt. Since many movies and tvs are on hold because of these writers. Many streaming services and tv networks decided to just double down on non scripted shows than pay more money to Script writers. I mean locking people with ADHD and bipolar disorder in a mansion full of alcohol is easier drama to make than paying a script writer asking for a raise.

I like Survivor, Traitors and The circle.... But the new reality shows will be produce now will be some last minute asspull since tv networks cannot use writers. They will rather exploit a person with mental disorder and give them the "villain edit" than pay writers more.

I remember the previous Hollywood writers strike that temporarily stopped movie and TV content creation. It took some time for the industry to catch-up and start releasing content again. I wonder how this one will be resolved and how long it will last.

The last time this happened, a lot of shows got cancelled. It was a shame. But honestly, I'm glad this is happening. Studios and networks make millions off of shows and they are definitely not paying writers their fair share. The writers need to be compensated fairly too. So maybe it will be an inconvenience to us TV fans for a few months, but I still hope the writers win.

Videogame voice over actors tried a pull a stunt like this before. What did the game companies response from the protest? They end up refusing to hire union voice actors and hire aspiring actors who are not union since they are cheaper.

There's always going to be injustice, but it doesn't mean they can't fight for what they deserve. Also this is gaining some traction and a lot of celebrities are showing their support so hopefully they'll be able to negotitate. I read that the entertainment industry already lost 10 million from this... which is enough to fulfill almost all of the writer's demands for a year, lol.

This writer is so confident they will win, not realizing networks can hire non union nameless writers who wants to make a name or worst use AI.

The writers are also striking against CHAT GPT

My biggest fear is some of my favorite shows might get canceled because of this strike despite their popularity

If they are protected by their union, they can't be fired for going on a strike. Hard to say if they will win, but there have been many supporters so I think they will be able to negotiate something.

Yup. This is exactly what happened the last time the writers went on a strike. Shows that were even greenlit for a new season had to be ended mid-season. It's likely it'll happen again.

I guess they will always find some other writers just depend how quality. Also A.I will help replace them.
TV programs will show reruns of old show and maybe sell those between. Netflix sell to Apple TV and Apple TV sell some his show to Netflix.

I hope that the writer's demands are justified. It's a shake that creative people have to go on strike..they should get what they deserve. And even worse is when your creativity os replaced by some technology advancements.
I am not a very big fan of Reality shows.

If this wont get resolve, I fear for the lives of many shows I love. In 2007 strike many hit shows got canceled because the strike lasted 3 months.

I remember this happening some time ago because I posted about it in my blog. It happened between 2013 and 2015. It did not last long and everything was resolved. If it does last a long time, I will just go back to watch a lot of series to get caught up on or introduced to

LOL Imagine if the Tv networks decided to ignore the writers and do lots of reality shows instead, then suddenly reality tv editors will start a union too.

Stranger Things season 5 is currently being delayed because of the strike. And a lot of actors/actresses didn't show up for the MTV awards tonight to show support. It's getting realll.

There is only so much room to put up more tents along metro sidewalks. I think the writers are fighting a losing battle here. You say they should be paid what they are worth, maybe they already are.

Compared to what the networks are making off their work, I highly doubt that writers are getting paid what they deserve. Apparently they are not getting paid fairly for their work being streamed. Their list of demands is actually pretty reasonable, not sure why no one has come out to resolve the problem.
