Korean Dramas Are Getting Shorter

Postby cmoneyspinner » 10 Jun 2023, 18:39

I remember when I first started watching Korean dramas. Anywhere from 20 to 50+ episodes was common. But lately, I have noticed some series do not have as many episodes. Found this interesting article explaining why.

"In order to catch the viewers' attention, the quick story development gives the viewers a sense of great immersion. Therefore the length of the drama is shortened with the story development speeding up. This became the trend, so broadcast stations also started to shorten the length of their dramas."

I have mixed emotions about this change. On the one hand, I do like that I can get to the end a lot quicker. On the other hand, I miss the detailed character development and how the main plot and the sub-plots get all twisted up and have to be unraveled.

I do hope they do a "mix". I like the K-dramas with a long story where you get to know the characters better. I loved Dong Yi and Six Flying Dragons.

If you want long dramas, Go for Turkish Dramas (30 t0 150 episodes and each episode is like 2 hours), Latin Telenovelas(200 episodes), Australian Soaps(they last for decades) and Filipino Telseryes(300 episode average and each episode is 25 minutes). Thai Lakorns have 10 to 30 episodes.

East Asian dramas have an average of 10 to 30 episodes. Japan, Korea and Taiwan dramas usually have that length and they are aired weekly.
The exception is China have 30 to 70 episodes when it comes to tv dramas.

Weekly indian dramas have average of 100 episodes. Daily Indian soaps last for 3,400 episodes.

I actually enjoyed the Turkish dramas that I watched. But it did take forever to finish!

As for other ones, I am not into soaps and telenovelas.

Indian dramas could be good, but they sabotage everything, in 3 years the story of a generation moves forward. Any character can be replaced anytime because in such long dramas actors do not stay connected forever.

Do you mean they didn't take a lesson from the American soap operas? The actors and actresses on those series grow old and die on the set! I remember watching them when they were young and seeing them when they were old, decades later. WOW! Talking about long-term gainful employment.

They are always one way. We always know the storyline from the first action.

I have mixed feelings about this. I enjoy watching Korean dramas (kdrama). In fact, I used to despise them, but now I adore them.

Well i guess these days they are trying to focus on quality or they simply feel people prefer their dramas to be shorter. For me though i do not mind if its long, the most important thing is that it has good plot.

I love watching Kdramas. But when I joined my favorite forum site RIF, I stopped watching Kdramas. I no longer have links with their videos. I may check back their YouTube channel.

I hate soap operas that are out of reality. Best thing is to earn money.

Some of the historical K-dramas are epic. You relly need to set aside a block of time to watch. I find that I can handle the K-dramas that are 16 episodes. That number of episodes seems to be the right amount to develop a plot and finish it.

All I know now is that Netflix is planning to spend 2.5 billion US dollars on creating more Korean content. They prefer investing in Korean content over addressing the writers' strikes

I think they made it shorter at present, because there are lots of project of Korean actors and actress that should be taken into action in a short span of time. If they will create a more than 50+ episode, like Queen Seon Deok, they will not meet the standard that Korean culture had put into place, but I don't have knowledge when it started. The advantage is that, there will be more series to watch after 12 or 16 episodes and some series, just to continue the story, have Season 2 that people really wait for them to watch.

I think it is better that way though, most times they just add filler episodes just to make it longer.

2023 is loaded with K-drama releases. Quite a few are Season 2.
