K-Dramas Based on Korean Webtoons

Postby cmoneyspinner » 09 May 2023, 21:12

Thanks to @Netherrealmer's discussion thread (viewtopic.php?f=67&t=29709), I learned the word "webtoon". Come to find out that many of the Korean dramas I enjoyed were based on webtoons. So far these are the K-dramas I watched that were based on a webtoon.

The Heavenly Idol (2023)
Duty After School (2023)
The Forbidden Marriage (2022)
Tomorrow (2022)
The King's Affection (2021)
The Uncanny Counter (2020)
Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency (2019)
The Tale of Nokdu (2019)

All of the historical ones.
The Forbidden Marriage (2022)
The King's Affection (2021)
Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency (2019)
The Tale of Nokdu (2019)

But Tomorrow (2022) deserves an honorable mention.
It's modern-day but it's about grim reapers and there is one episode about a Korean war hero that I have rewatched several times. (I cry every time.)

I want them to adapt "Mom, I'm sorry" Its about a college kid who found out his mother will die of incurable disease after he served the military. He made a deal with the grim ripper and gave away 44 years of his lifespan so his mother wont die. The grim ripper turned his mom into a 19 year old girl. A son and a mother goes to college together.

Oh wow! That one sounds good. Yeah, I would love to see an adaptation. People like to do YouTube videos of top 10 or best 25 K-dramas, etc. and I search to find the ones discussing webtoons so I can keep up. :D

I was not familiar with the actor who plays the cab driver until I watched Season 1. I like him! I want to watch more shows with him. He could be the lead or have a support role. For that reason, "Signal" is on my watch list.

China also make adaptations of webtoons but they nerf the violence, they turn gay characters straight and make Platonic friends lovers. They also add a lot of filler characters to make the story long.

That list really shows how strong the webtoon-to-drama pipeline has become, especially because the source material already comes with built-in pacing, character arcs, and visually structured scenes. A lot of these adaptations work because Korean webtoons often develop side characters and tension in a serialized format that translates well into episodic TV. *Tomorrow* and *The Uncanny Counter* are great examples, since both kept the emotional core while adapting fantasy elements for screen audiences. I would also add *Itaewon Class* to the conversation because it helped push this adaptation trend into the mainstream.

Hmmm would have never thought it would end that way. Am sure if they adapt this, they might want to change certain things.
