What is the most annoying romance movie trope

Many romance movies have cliches or formulas that directors use over and over again because they sell. Many of them are annoyingly over used. Which of the following annoys you the most?

Evil mother in law (sometimes father in law or grandparent)


The parent of the main guy is very oppose to the main character. It doesn't matter if she is kind, smart, beautiful and honest. Sometimes it leads to hiring goons to kill her or hiring an spy to find her flaws.

Cinderella story
A love story between a rich person and a poor person. Why can't we have 2 people of the same social standing? Why it has to be between a Cinderella and a rich person.


Childhood friends
The main characters are friends since childhood.


Long age gaps between actors who plays character around the same age

I don't mind pairing between an older actor or younger actress and older actress and younger actor. If their age gap is mentioned in the story. I had seen a movie where a 50 year old actor paired with an 30 year old actors playing the role of childhood friends.
There is no way in hell these 2 are childhood friends since kindergarten.


Mean Girlfriend the main male will cheat on with the female protagonist.

The villainess of the story is the girlfriend of the main guy. Main guy will cheat on her with female protagonist and we are not suppose to feel bad about her because she is mean. Yay glorifying cheating.

Whirlwind romance- They just met for like a day and they want to get married already. In Titanic the romance between Jack and Rose happened in a span of 3 days.

Perfect virginal female protagonist With the exception of Pretty woman and Slumdog Millionaire where the lead females are prostitutes. Majority of the romance movies have virginal female leads. As in the only guy they will get to kiss is the main guy while the main guy is allowed to be a playboy.

Enemy turn lovers
At the start of the movie they want to murder each other



Glasses makes you ugly



If you wear glasses you are ugly and you will have a makeover scene and once the glasses are gone, you are hot....

Don't laugh at me. I needed glasses when I was younger but didn't want to wear them because? Glasses make you ugly.

When I got older that got switched. It became "Glasses make you look intelligent." Of course, by that time they had also started making contact lenses and people were wearing them instead of eyeglasses.

I know! Have you seen those commercials where you can do a "virtual try on" and choose the glasses you like. Those people look like models.

However, back on point, one cheesy line in a romantic movie that I have never liked was ... "You had me at Hello". Gimme a break. That is so cheesy!

I voted Cinderella story. But I think that the one I hate most is happily ever after. Love is never like the movies all full of magic and happiness. Most stories I hear about love they are like a very bad porn mixed with a horror film lol. The world if full of drama I do not want it. only money

I enjoy watching romance movies. I just don't like a romance movie if the story flow is not good, too shallow and it has no meaning.

My least favourite romance trope is when the woman says no to the man and he doesn't listen and does increasingly dramatic and/or manipulative things to try and cooerce her into going out with him. For example in the Notebook, when Ryan Gosling's character threatens to kill himself by jumping off the Ferris wheel if the woman won't go out with him. Such a gross and dangerous message to send to girls and women. That kind of behaviour is not okay.

I guess the romance movie trope of childhood sweethearts has outlived its usefulness. In the olden days, this cliché would have held water because people used to maintain contact over extended periods.

This is no longer the case in the present world where relationships are cont0nusly established and broken. Many factors are responsible for this fluidity. A key element is the high level of fluidity in people's temporal spaces.
