Trump wants to put 100% tariffs on movies filmed out the USA

Postby Netherrealmer » 05 May 2025, 13:37

Foreign movies for sure will be affected first, Anime movies and Korean films are making lots of money in American box office and streaming service. A lot of Hollywood movies are filmed in Canada, Australia and other foreign countries to have cheaper production. Hollywood earnings relies on foreign box office. This could damage Hollywood but we know trump is against Hollywood. Imagine if he tariffs Chinese movies, China will tariff Hollywood movies too. Hollywood relies on China Box office.

Ireland has a small TV and movie production movie, if these tariffs come into effect, I hope they won't affect that too much.

Well that's going to suck for both movie makers and cinema audiences. So many movies are filmed outside the US because it's cheaper (eg. heaps of movies are shot in Australia, and in some European countries). If they shoot in the US the costs of production will go up.

Yes, so were Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess, but I was talking about movies that were filmed here like The Matrix.

This is definitely going to cause a lot of issues for foreign movies, is 100% not too much?

You have raised a serious question about the direction of the global film industry. It is true that the international market plays a major role in Hollywood’s success. Tariffs between countries can greatly affect the distribution of films. However, this is an opportunity for Asian films like anime and Korean movies to continue to shine. This competition can bring more creativity and improve the quality of content. As the industry changes, fans have a wider choice—and that is encouraging.
