It depends what it is. For example, I use a lot of open source software, but sometimes the things I needed to download for uni didn't work quite right unless you used the right software- like I can use opensource software to read and edit pdfs, but some features on the ones from my tutor weren't visible unless I used Acrobat.
It makes sense to avoid subscriptions if you don't really need them.
