I do farm ducks, chickens and guinea fowls for business but I also want to have my own meat source because of the inflation. I decided to go with rabbits because they dont need a lot space. I do not sell their meat because to sell their meat I need to join an organization and I already a member of a duck farming association.

My reason for keeping rabbit is not business but its meat. All they eat are grass which I got plenty for free and mulberry leaves.

I started with 3 female breeders and 2 males. Whenever they have babies I keep the big females because they make good breeders and then fattens the males and petite females for food. Rabbit meat is expensive but if you farm rabbit meat for your own food, its cheap, Since unlike chickens that needs feeds, I just feed rabbit grass, weeds and kitchen scraps.

Because I dont spend money for their feeds, I have free meat every 3 months. The meat is high protein, low fat and healthy. Keeping rabbits for meat will not only save you money for meat but also saves you from cholesterol that you will get from chicken, beef or pork.

If you do not want to go vegan, You have small space and you love meat, rabbit will help you survive the inflation.

I kill them with a Ballista bolt, It kills rabbits and guinea pigs in seconds so they will never suffer.
It is what German people use to kill rabbits. Yes I cook them myself, I find them easier to kill than ducks and chickens because they dont make noises. The ballista Bolt kills fast, I bought mine from ebay. It kills them in seconds.

Most people peel rabbits because they use the skin to make pelts but I just scaled them because I like the taste of the skin when it is fried or slow roasted they became crispy like suckling pigs.

Ouch! I love rabbits as pets. Never though of having them as common food on the table. I cannot bear to see them cooked and eaten.

Are you vegan? At this moment rabbit is the healthiest meat along with guinea pig. I will even consider it healthier than fish because fish have mercury poisoning issues. I kill animals for food, Vegan lifestyle is only for first world countries and hindus. I do heavy farm work and vegan diet cannot supply that. Even if you go vegan animals still die. Insects, rats and birds gets killed so you can eat your veggies. I kill thousand of ants whenever I harvest fruits because I have to drown them in water. I use pesticide to kill insects so your salad green is bug free.

Also rabbits are overrated as pets. They are not affectionate like cats and dogs. Meat breed rabbits are also different from your fancy pet rabbits. New Zealand rabbits and Satin rabbits are not friendly.

I had killed ducks, chickens, camels, goats,donkeys,rabbits, sheep and lamb. I am a Survivalist and doomsday prepper.

I want to try pigs but illegal here.

That's sounds good for you. I really like the rabbit meat but I don't know where to start in keeping them.

You just need a cage and people that lives in cities can also keep them because they dont stink. You just need a never ending supply of grass and mulberry leaves. If your backyard at least have 5 mulberry trees, you will never buy feeds again.

I feed them leaves and stems. A mulberry cutting will be useful in just 4 months.

They also like sweet potato leaves (not potato, potato is poisonous), Cassava leaves, Banana leaves, grass and your garden scraps.

I use their poop as fertilizer for the mulberry trees.

Your rabbits will have 2 hierarchies, the breeders and the fatteners.

The breeders will be your pets, Their purpose is to make babies. The fatteners are their children, If you found a large baby, you can keep them as breeders, if they are small or not friendly they will become fatteners.

I have tried eating rabbits our own pets then that was attacked by dogs. Our neighbor cooked it and taste good actually but I am eating it with sadness of course.

do not buy pet breeds like lionhead,dwarf,mini lop,angora, polish, Harlequin rabbits and Himalayan. They have no meat, their body nutrition goes to their hair. If its long haired, it has no meat.

The meat breeds are California,New Zealand, Satin, Silver fox,rex,champagne d argent, and Florida, anything outside those breeds are skin and bones.

It's hard to imagine not getting attached to rabbits - I love rodents as pets. I know I sound hypocritical as I'm not a vegan, and I know the animals that are normal vs taboo to consume varies around the world. Anyways, it's very respectable that you can do so many things to sustain yourself!

Rabbits are good as a source of meat. Tastes a lot like chicken. I do not know why in our area they are not popular as other domestic animals like cows, pigs, chickens. I'll have to check this out.

Its actually harder for me to kill chickens and ducks because they are noisy when they get killed. Also the Ballista is a fast killer so rabbits dont suffer. I can declare my meat rabbits have happier lives than rabbits kept pets by 6 year olds. Most rabbits who are pets of children suffer from injuries.

Same here in my locality, it isn't that popular like other animals that we love to eat. But I know it can filling if you eat it like food too

In peru, Cancer hospitals feeds rabbits and guinea pigs to patient doing chemo. apparent compared to other meats it keeps them strong from the weakening medication. Also chicken,beef,pork and mercury polluted fish can be cancerous. Rabbit is clean non toxic meat. My favorite part is the saddle and the legs, the ribs part and the head goes to my cats and dogs.

Not from my experience. They scream like biatches when I slash their throat or cut their neck. Rabbits die silently after I use ballista bolt on them.

I wish I had rabbits. I hear their urine is so good when sprayed on the plants it keeps the mice and squirrels away.

I have been also planning to grow my own food,i do have an organic garden where i do not use any chemicals to grow my own vegetables apart from natural pesticides and insecticides that are not even systemic.

This idea you have brought is quite intriging,i once eat a wild rabbit when i was young and it all went well for me so i do not think i will have any reaction now.But i have just discovered crabs,shrimp and most sea food not for me apart from common fish.

So i just may expand my delicacy to rabbit meat and village chickens and layers which will be home grown.Thanks for sharing this idea it is very viable:)
