I'm opposed to sharing books online illegally though, since it's already hard enough for authors to make a living.

There are ways to do it legally though. You can read classics that are out of copyright (like on Project Gutenburg) and some authors give some of their books away online for free as a promotional too. You can also read them online through a library.
