Thrifty Cooking Hacks: Low-Cost Alternatives to Expensive Pantry Items

Postby Netherrealmer » 04 Sep 2025, 07:37

1. Extra-virgin sunflower oil over extra-virgin olive oil
Olive oil has long been praised as a healthy kitchen staple, but it often comes with a hefty price tag. A great alternative is extra-virgin sunflower oil. Like olive oil, it’s cold-pressed and packed with beneficial nutrients, making it suitable for salads, low-heat cooking, or even soap-making. The best part? It usually costs up to five times less, giving you the same versatility without straining your budget.

2. Chickpeas over pine nuts
Pine nuts add a delicious nuttiness to dishes like pesto, but their high cost can be discouraging. A simple swap is roasted chickpeas. When blended, they mimic the creamy texture of nuts and provide a nutty flavor that works wonderfully in sauces, spreads, or even sprinkled on salads. Chickpeas are not only affordable but also packed with protein and fiber.

3. Oats over almond flour
Almond flour is popular in gluten-free and low-carb recipes, but it can be pricey. Ground oats make a fantastic budget-friendly alternative. Simply blitz rolled oats in a blender until fine, and you’ll have oat flour that works well in pancakes, muffins, and cookies. Oats are easy to find, cheap, and still provide a wholesome, hearty base for baking.

4. Evap Milk over cream in most savory dishes that needs cream- I just made clam chowder that uses evaporated milk instead of cream, and guess what? There's no difference. It's still thick. It's still rich. It felt like I still use cream. In sabore dishes that needed cream, like Japanese cream stew or chicken ala king, you can have evaporated milk take the place of cream. Just add a bit of slurry so it will be thick.

Thanks Netherrealmer for those money saving tips. I especially like the first one "Extra-virgin sunflower oil over extra-virgin olive oil", I didn't know you could swop them like that and extra-virgin olive oil is very expensive.

This list is a treasure trove for budget-conscious cooks! Using sunflower oil instead of olive oil is a great way to save money without sacrificing quality.

Chickpeas instead of pine nuts? That’s a real innovation—cheaper, still delicious! And oats instead of almond flour is a quick fix for home cooks.

Evaporated milk in place of cream is a modern take. When you learn to substitute, you become more independent in the kitchen. Keep sharing your hacks—they’re so useful!

Don't forget the egg substitute. Maybe eggs aren't that expensive where you live. But I broke down and bought powdered eggs to use in my recipes.

It's true, budget-friendly cooking methods save a lot. I use ripe bananas as an egg substitute in my cakes—they create a delicious flavor and are budget-friendly. Being creative in the kitchen is a great way to live smart without sacrificing your budget.

Do you know the liquid in canned beans? In baking, it can be used for an egg substitute. So if you buy a lot of canned beans, canned peas, canned chickpeas, the juice inside the can can be an egg alternative for baking. Vegans call it aquafaba.

I DID NOT KNOW THAT!
But I believe we throw away a lot of stuff that we could be using. We just know any better.

These are good tips.
We used Olive Oil for cooking once only.
Did not repeat it because Olive oil is said to be not so suitable for deep and repeated frying, which is somewhere or other a common need in Indian cooking.
We use Chickpeas in special gravy stuff that we make and in salads as well.

Well, olive oil is more about sautéing and making salads. It's not really meant for deep-frying, but you can use it on making canned fish.
