Fitness over 50?

Postby crackerjack9 » 07 Dec 2015, 22:20

I just turned 50 years old. I know I don't have the muscle tone I used to have and I've gained weight. I'm watching my diet and trying to eat healthy, but I hate working out and won't join a gym because I know I'll never go. What are some exercises I can do at home to start getting fit again? Can anyone recommend a DVD that I can work out to?

The great thing about a gym is that you will get a whole range of classes of which a couple you may find enjoyable enough to continue training well into your 80s!

Failing that, have a read through this page: https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitn ... ed_routine

The key thing to do at any age is to build as much muscle as you can because muscle will burn those calories all the time. Right now, my muscles are burning the chips and sausage roll I ate for lunch - actually they already did that ages ago and my muscles are now burning the noodles I had just before heading to bed. Yes. I burn a load of calories sleeping, watching TV, playing the computer and... eating!

I'm 43, though, so I'm young and have a youngster's metabolism on my side. I estimate my maintenance calories are about 3000 a day.

For other types of exercise, pick a sport you enjoy. There are bound to be people who play it at a less competitive level than a 20 year old might.

Finally, try tai chi as this is an exercise you can do well into your 100s.

A gym is good, but walking is good too, my neighbor is 63, he walks every day and stays in great shape. I haven't been to a gym in a long time, and not sure I would join any time soon.

As a 69 year old, I would work out in a fitness center but found I pushed myself too hard trying to maintain a fit body.

Then I would become fatigued and so tired I would wind up spending a few days or the weekend trying to recuperate.

I finally just started walking. It is easy on the joints and I usually try to walk 3 to 5 miles a day. I listen to my favorite music from my IPHONE as I walk.

Of course I am retired so having time to walk is not a problem anymore.

At 50 a gym should be ideal and you can find it interesting if you do it in a group. The best form of exercise which can give you flexibility and keep you fit at this age is yoga. If you are not on to any form of exercise as of now, you can start walking initially and after a few days when your muscles start relaxing you can try yoga which would definitely keep you healthy. There are many online sites which can guide you.

Well, they do say 50 is the new 40, right? It's good that you're looking after your health and general wellbeing, as we all should be. I too hate intense workouts, so I tend to walk. It has to be power walking that raises your body temperature and has your heart pumping in order for it to work. I love walking and can walk for miles. I keep hearing over and over that many doctors actually highly recommend walking over a lot of workout regimes like jogging because it's kinder to your knees and bones, especially as you get older.

I'm 65 and my health is really good. I haven't even had a cold for years and I look after a 9 year old who constantly brings coughs and colds home from school. I don't go to the gym but I do walk a lot so maybe that keeps me fit. I could lose a few pounds round the middle but I'm not really overweight.

A man that lived by my parents walked a lot right up until he passed away at the age of 90. He was a nice old man, family friend even. My mom would drive him to town and wait for him to do his shopping and he wouldn't want a drive home so he would walk instead. I enjoy walking to but the road we are on is busy so I take advantage of the walking park on occasion.

You can try out Yoga and breathing exercises to keep fit without straining much . You have to do just 30 minutes sitting at home . I am 60 + but still maintaining good health with natural black hair, and sharp eye sight. I do not even have BP or sugar which normally lot of people of my age will have and who ever see me for the first time, says that i dont look like 60 but only 45+ . If you want , i can send you the link for yoga and you practice it . it is very easy . No strain and no sweating

That is wonderful, sounds like you take good care of yourself and that is good.I could do better if I watched what I eat more often. I splurged a lot over the holidays, so need to shake a few pounds off quickly.
