The Maldives has become the first nation to enact a "Generational smoking ban", prohibiting the purchase, use, or sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2007. The landmark law, effective November 1st, aims to create a "tobacco-free generation" and protect public health. The ban includes all forms of tobacco, as well as e-cigarettes and vaping products for all ages, and applies to both residents and visitors.
Retailers face hefty fines for non-compliance, cementing the country's commitment to eradicating smoking.
