Smoke Talk: Maldives' Generational Smoking Ban

Postby ptrikha21 » 02 Nov 2025, 15:50

The Maldives has become the first nation to enact a "Generational smoking ban", prohibiting the purchase, use, or sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2007. The landmark law, effective November 1st, aims to create a "tobacco-free generation" and protect public health. The ban includes all forms of tobacco, as well as e-cigarettes and vaping products for all ages, and applies to both residents and visitors.
Retailers face hefty fines for non-compliance, cementing the country's commitment to eradicating smoking.

I completely support this move, the rate at which most people smoke is becoming something else these days. Especially our young ones.

I'm glad to see that the ban includes e-cigarettes and vaping products. They seem to be very accessible and addictive for young people. I know people who moved from smoking to vapes in an effort to quit, but they don't seem to be able to give up the vapes.

Addiction to smoking can be very very hard to give up.
So hopefully this ban works fine.

The major problem that I have with social policies and regulations like this is how it would be implenei. Would they monitor those youngsters in their houses?

Yes, that is a concern. Plus what about countries/cities/states with high population?

Haha, the Maldives have decided to completely turn down the heat. This move is truly international. It's like they've decided to create a completely smoke-free generation. The idea is neat, though some people will find it too strict, but in terms of health, it's a great step that the world should learn from.

I used to smoke. I smoked around 2-3 packs a day for around 20 years.

I went to vaping before cigarettes went to $5 a pack here. Then I quit vaping when my stepdaughter was 13 and said I should stop. I quit cold turkey the next day. I've been free of nicotine for around 6 years now.

I breathe better, feel better, can taste food better, and I get sick less.

I sometimes smell people who smoke and it's super gross.

I'd support a worldwide ban, personally. I hate it. Cigarettes and vapes.

You have done a great thing by quitting smoking and even vaping after many years of using it. It is not a game at all and requires strength and a pure heart. Quitting cold turkey and holding on without going back for six years is a great victory. Your health has gained a new lease of life and your example can inspire others. A small step of listening to your child has turned into a life changing move.

Glad to get an honest feedback or can we say self story from a person who used to smoke so much.
I think you should write more about your journey on different platforms to make people aware of the hazards of smoking & inspire them to quite smoking.
