Rich in fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and minerals, Chia seeds promote digestive health, support heart health, aid weight management, boost energy, and help maintain strong bones. What’s more, this tiny superfood stabilises blood sugar levels and is packed full of antioxidant properties, which can improve skin health.
So, we could all do with adding them to our diet. Here are THREE simple ways you can easily incorporate chia seeds into your diet.
1. Chia water
One of the simplest ways to add chia seeds to your diet is to add them to water.
To make chia water, soak 1/4 cup (40 grams) of chia seeds in 4 cups (1 litre) of water for 20–30 minutes. You can add chopped fruit or squeeze in lemon, lime, or orange juice to add flavour and stamp your own stamp on this recipe. Personally, I like to drop in a few blueberries, goji berries or cranberries.
2. Egg substitute
If for whatever reason, you’re unable to eat eggs, worry not! Chia seeds make a fantastic substitute in recipes. To substitute for one egg, soak 1 tablespoon (15 grams) of chia seeds in 3 tablespoons (45 mL) of water.
3. Homemade granola
Making granola is easier than most people think. You can use any mixture of seeds, nuts, and oats you like, and chucking in chia seeds to any recipe will ensure your granola is crammed full of goodies your body will thank you for. If you don’t have time to make your own, plenty of commercial granolas include chia.
