Protein Drinks Without The Protein Powder

Postby Spontaneo » 12 Jan 2025, 22:59

I am in search of good protein drinks. I was just on Quora and saw where a person mentioned that before protein powder was invented, eggs mixed with peanut butter and milk were staples.

Do you drink protein shakes without the protein powder? Are they cheap or expensive to prepare? Where do you purchase the ingredients?

Thank you!

A friend of mine used to drink smoothies with an egg in for extra protein when she needed to gain weight. I imagine adding it to a smoothie makes consuming a raw egg seem less gross.

I add almond butter to my smoothies for protein. Your peanut butter would work the same way. I've also used silken tofu (the soft kind). I just buy it at the supermarket. Other than that, whole milk has protein. Oats are good too and you can put them through the blender. Sweet potatoes have high protein for a vegetable. Hemp seed or hemp meal is good too but you'd probably have to get it from a health food shop. Avocado is nice for adding good fats and makes it thicker if you want to eat your smoothie in a bowl (I like to), but I don't know what they cost where you are. In some places they're cheap, in others not so much.

Does having smoothies in a bowl "seem" like you are consuming more than when having in a glass? In the past, I have done the portion plate trick and the smaller plate trick. I am wondering if visualizing in a bowl would make a difference?

Out of all you have mentioned, only almond milk is a specialty milk that is available. Oat milk too. Both are offered sweetened and unsweetened. Both are available at a discount store here in the United States called Dollar Tree for $1.25 a carton. I have considered buying such milk but did not think I would like. I am a cow milk drinker, fat free skim.

I don't know, maybe? I do it because I like to add muesli to it, and then it's easier to eat with a spoon. I suppose it does feel more like a complete meal that way, compared with just drinking something.

Today, I prepared a pitcher of peanut butter vanilla protein shakes. I have had one and find delicious and filling tonight. If I am hungry after midnight, I can grab a 12-ounce cup shake.

All I did was blend peanut butter, egg, milk and vanilla wafers.
