Fake Facts: Learning what you knew to be true just is not so

Postby OldGuy » 21 Dec 2024, 17:15

The internet is full of conflicts. The only things you actually know are that different sources offer different and often completely opposite statements about the same things. One can't be true but how do you know which is true and which is fake? Do you and your personal connections fight over things you can't control, can't change and the only real argument is which source is giving the truth about the topic? How do you react if something you learned years ago is finally proven for certain not to be true?

That's why it's important to know how to evaluate sources.

It's often uncomfortable to learn that something that you thought was true is not, but it can be exciting too. Some times things turn out to be better or more interesting than you expected, or something that seemed impossible to fix turns out to have a solution after all.

Even some things that get reported as facts get debunked years later. In Texas, we have a "junk science law". Right now there is a case where a man was convicted of killing his 2-year-old child. They are trying to overthrow the verdict because they said the jury made the decision based on "junk science". What they believed were scientific facts turned out to be bogus!

The truth of the natter is that we keep learning on a daily basis. There are some things we consider to be true now based on our level of knowledge, only to find out they are no longer true later on.
